Movie Reviews of Chushingura

Movie Review: Samurai honor, political intrigue, romance, brilliant cinema
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this film in the 60's in a small theater over 3 hours with one intermission. I never left my seat, in fact I started out sitting in the aisle at the back because the theater was full.

The photography is gorgeous with brilliant winter scenes backing up intense sword fights in which you aren't sure what happened until someone keels over dead.

Political betrayal is revenged while honor ultimately prevails. You are immersed in the feudal Japanese world and yet reminded of much the same thing happening today.

Definitely worth seeing and buying once you've seen it.

Movie Review: On the quality of the 2001 DVD version.
Summary: 5 Stars

Several reviewers have suggested that this DVD is based on a poor print or of poor technical quality.
I obtained a copy of this edition (2001) from the local library system to check the quality, and found it
satisfactory. Perhaps they were viewing the earlier release (which still seems to be offered on Amazon).

As for the movie itself, yes it develops slowly but every minute is enjoyable. And there is a climactic
battle for those who demand action. The celebrated 1941 version by Mizoguchi bypasses the battle
completely!

Movie Review: Inagaki's Chushingura
Summary: 5 Stars

Japan loves the story of the loyal 47 ronin, who avenge the wrongful forced-seppuku death of their master. It's been told like a bazillion times before, and illustrated, and there are plays, too! Of films, I count at least 27 different versions.

I like Mizoguchi's version in two parts for its aesthetic. But, this Inagaki version is really a lot of Hollywood-style fun. Color, for one thing, makes this easy to like, and a little cameo of Toshiro Mifune doesn't hurt.

This was a film meant to be enjoyed. So, enjoy already!

Movie Review: 47 Ronin
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is a well done version of the original story. In Japan the story is a monument to the Samurai Ethos. The word means literally "to serve". This is about a lord who was forced into committing Sepicou (ritual suicide) by another lord.
Masterless Samurai are called Ronin. They could have hired themselves out to other lords but preferred poverty until they could take revenge against the evil lord, then they all committed suicide, too venerate their dead master.

Movie Review: The Greatest Film Ever Made
Summary: 5 Stars

Chushingura is simply the greatest film of all-time. Unfortunately, the versions available on DVD and VHS are abridged and some of the greatest scenes, such as the hari-kari scene amidst the cherry blossoms have been edited out.
