Movie Review: Up Close

Close is a rather risky favorite artist.
I often site him and very few know who I mean, and that often surprises me. He is so obvious.
This DVD (playing incidentally now repeatedly on cable) is such an insight into his process,life, the art "scene" he inhabited, into artistic process. It would be easily among my top five artist documentaries. Because you get a film spliced with his own talking, friends like Glass/Katz commenting, artist buddies reflecting on the times/their rocess-their relationship, there comes a point where it is a meditation on the school of art I grew up with, in the 70's that I think is uniquely under appreciated/understood for what it was. He speaks to the value of process, context, the fascinating tension of his work. Clearly Close took portraiture and redefined it. Given its role in art that simple thing makes watching this an important interface with a maker, and his meanings. Rare to have such insights. Then there is the fact that Close was unbelievably hampered by different forms of disability yet found a way to bring his genius into form through this . What a work horse, driven, amazing, one of a kind.
Someone in the film talks about viewing his work and Glass clarifies this with that famous quote about hearing and listening. All I know is in 1977 I attended a show, and in person standing before the works, I knew this was a defining moment in art for me.
I'd show this to students, friends, recommend it widely.
It was superbly made and has the depth his work requires. I can think, off hand, of almost no humor in the piece.
Something that always struck me about his work.
