Movie Reviews of Christmas with the KranksMovie Review: Holiday Fun Complete With Nosy Neighbors and Fumbling Cops Summary: 5 Stars
When Luther (Tim Allen) and Nora (Jamie Lee Curtis) Kranks only daughter, Blair (Julie Gonzalo) leaves home for the peace corp. right before Christmas, the two lonely parents realize that Christmas just won't be the same without a daughter to celebrate with. So Luther comes up with the idea to skip Christmas altogether, and take a cruise that will be leaving at high noon on Christmas Day. When he convinces Nora, the two begin informing their friends and neighbors about their change of plans, and soon find that the entire town has turned their backs on the couple. But when Blair phones home on Christmas Eve to inform her parents that she's coming home for Christmas, with her new fiance, Enrique (Rene Lavan), in tow; and that he's more than excited to see what a real American Christmas is like, the Kranks are sent into a tizzy, and immediately begin enlisting the help of their now-enemy neighbors to get everything set up for Blair's arrival. And with just twelve hours left, they're going to need all the help they can get.
I was a huge fan of John Grisham's SKIPPING CHRISTMAS - the book that this movie was adapted from - so I was unsure of whether or not the big-screen version would be able to compare with the literary version. I needn't have worried, for CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS was a hilarious sleigh ride of crazy characters, and miserable mishaps. Tim Allen (THE SANTA CLAUSE and HOME IMPROVEMENT) is fabulous as the somewhat grinchy Luther Krank, complete with a fake tan and botox injections; while Jamie Lee Curtis (HALLOWEEN and FREAKY FRIDAY) does a fabulous job of switching from scream-queen mode, into doting-mother mode without a hitch. However, it's Dan Aykroyd (playing Vic Frohmeyer; LOSER and PEARL HARBOR) who steals the show, as the nosy neighbor, who feels that he's in charge of the entire neighborhood. With appearances by Cheech Marin (GOOD BOY! and SPY KIDS) as a fumbling cop, and Erik Per Sullivan (MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE and JOE DIRT) as the obnoxious, trouble-making Spike Frohmeyer. CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS is a delightful holiday film that analyzes an entire town and how those who choose to "skip" Christmas are alienated, while at the same time spreading holiday cheer. A fabulous addition to the holiday film genre, that will appeal to all, whether you're a crank or not.
