Movie Reviews of Christmas in ConnecticutMovie Review: A WARM AND FUZZY CHRISTMAS CLASSIC Summary: 5 Stars
Elizabeth Lane is the Martha Stewart (don't carry the analogy too far) of her day. The public and her publisher know her as the famous food writer for Smart Housekeeping magazine who lives with her husband and new baby on a farm in Connecticut. Her agent and would-be suitor know her as the single woman living in a Manhattan bachelorette apartment who can't cook a lick and whose famous recipes are supplied by her restaurant owner uncle. The facade works well until...Jefferson Jones (Morgan) is rescued from his sunken destroyer after staying alive partly by the sweet dreams of Lane's recipes on the little life raft. His nurse at the military hospital has marriage on her mind and thinks a real home Christmas experience would be the catalyst for a proposal. She used to care for the grandchild of Mr. Yardley (Greenstreet), the pompous, wealthy publisher of Smart Housekeeping and contacts him about setting up Christmas with Lane and her 'family'. He readily sees the potential boost in circulation, never mind that he might be doing something good for a war hero and 'tells' Lane she should be expecting Jones and him for the Holidays. The fun AND romance begins. Just an aside as to how morals have changed in movies. The housekeeper at the farm they 'commandeer' for the charade quits when she see Lane and her boss go into the bedroom together (it was all innocent but she doesn't know that) and she will not be a part of anything immoral. Lots of fun, romance and, of course, Christmas spirit. Good anytime of the year but especially fun now. Enjoy!! [...]
Movie Review: One of the very best holiday movies Summary: 5 Stars
I would give this movie 10 stars if I could.
"Christmas In Connecticut" has been a favorite holiday movie of mine since the early `80s, when I caught it by chance for the first time on a local station while relaxing during a holiday visit to my parents' house. Although my mom, brother, and I hadn't really planned to watch a whole movie right then, we all stayed with this great movie until the end, and really enjoyed it. The wry humor, the great actors (Barbara Stanwyck, Sydney Greenstreet, S.Z. Sakall, Dennis Morgan, Reginald Gardner, Una O'Connor), and the warm country setting make it a movie you'll want to see over and over. Since that first viewing almost 25 years ago, I probably haven't missed seeing it during the holiday season. I've been waiting for this to appear on DVD, and am glad it's finally here!
The extras here are very good, although not numerous. Besides the amusing trailer, the "Christmas In Connecticut" disc includes the outstanding Oscar-winning short film "Star In The Night," which brings the Nativity story to a 1940s diner/motel in the desert. Within a compelling re-telling of that old story, this film helps the viewer understand how the spirit of Christmas applies in the modern era - easily one of the best short films I've ever seen.
If you like this fine movie, you may want to consider getting the excellent Classic Holiday Collection, which includes this film along with two other great classics, "Boys Town" and "A Christmas Carol" (1938).
Movie Review: A Hidden Gem Summary: 5 Stars
Christmas in Connecticut (1945) starring Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan, Sydney Greenstreet, Reginald Gardiner, and S.Z.Sakall is an amusing story of lies, deception, and love. In short all the elements needed for a fluff comedy. Ten minutes into the film an experienced movie watcher will be able to predict almost every element of the plot.
Barbara Stanwyck who is pretending to be married so she can keep her job falls in love with a sailor, Dennis Morgan. Barbara tries to seduce him. He falls in love with her. Since this was made in 1945 and not 2005, he resists becoming involved with someone he believes to be already married.
The film is great holiday movie for the whole family. It is well worth watching.
However, the hidden gem of this DVD is the vintage Oscar-winning short: "Star in the Night."
"Star in the Night" is a modern retelling of an old story. It is told from an unexpected viewpoint that completely captures the true meaning of Christmas.
No flashy miracles, no Santa Claus, no big name stars, only a fine dramatic script with an emphasis on character development supported by a cast of solid character actors.
"Start in the Night" is the best, most moving holiday film I have seen in a very long time. This short (less than twenty minutes running time) is well worth the full price of the DVD.
Movie Review: If you've never seen this movie you have a rare opportunity Summary: 5 Stars
To see this film for the first time is a magical experience.
DO NOT READ ANY PLOT SYNOPSIS (SYNOPSISi?) Be open to a new experience...yes, from 1945!
This is an intelligent, witty and clever film written back in the days when screenwriters were artists. All of the characters have distinctive roles that keep them anchored into this whirlwind of a plot. Frankly, the film shouldn't work. The idea is bizarre and unlikely. There are many twists and turns but it's more than a screwball comedy, more than a christmas movie, more than a love story...it is an adventure. An adventure at christmastime during World War II.
It's an adventure that you don't tire of. There is surprising depth in this film: but you won't realize it until you've seen it 3 or 4 times. The first few times you are just hanging on, even shaking your head, laughing too hard and smiling too much. And then you think about it and it occurs to you that the plot works. It shouldn't work. No one could actually do this, could they? Yes, it's just a movie, but it has to be plausible to hook you in. And because of the writing, the acting and the direction, this film does more than just pull it off: it reaches out and pulls you in.
The genius of this film is that it accomplishes all this while in the guise of a simple, light-hearted christmas flick.
Movie Review: 5 Stars - Deee-lish! Summary: 5 Stars
On my top 10 list...
Please Watch This, the Original, not the Remake!
Barbara Stanwyck is excellent in this stinkin funny Christmas movie! Love it terrible! OK, this film is tied for first place of my favorite movies of all time, this and "The Shop Around the Corner" with Jimmy Stewart. "It's a Wonderful Life" a close third place.
The remake with Dyan Cannon & Kris Kristoferson is SOOOOO AWFUL, do NOT even compare them to each other. please! ICK.
Elizabeth Lane, (Barbra Stanwyck) the happy homemaker, writer, cook extraordinaire of 1945, is so funny and adorable, I could scream with delight. Her buddy, Felix is fabulous as the friend that saves her rear. Jefferson Jones the sailor, and Alexander Yardley her boss.. all a hoot. cast superbly, all of them, just perfect.
The fun begins at the house in Connecticut. Juggling a borrowed baby, a wedding, a wandering cow, a loose sleigh, flapping flapjacks... ohh so funny! Not going to give it away! You must see this delightful film.
don't you love old B & W movies, that are safe, no swearing, no nothing to have to jump up and cover the kid's eyes! Love it. Fun for the whole family.
My darling Norman and I watch this every Christmastime. Love it each and every time! Heartwarming, fun, delicious!
thanks, Sally
