Movie Review: Wonderful Account...

I would give this presentation a strong A! At times I felt like applauding. Several times I said outloud WoW. The entire history of Christianity is certainly a daunting task. And history always depends on the perspective of who is doing the telling. I felt that they chose wisely the people, events and issues in a clear and concise manner. But I am not without some objections... For instance, Constantine seemed to prove his true faith in several ways: he put an end to the Gladiators and blood sport. He initiated abolishing slavery. He built many churches including the Church of the Holy Seplecur in Jerusalem. He moved the capitol to Byzantium to get away from the pagan Senate and pagan citizens of Rome. He called for the elders of the Christian church from every city, the Council of Nicaea, which developed objective criteria to determine the genuine letters of New Testament Canon. And they recognized the Apostles Creed to be the true statement of Christian faith. The narrator suggested that Constantine was only being political without true faith, and that the Council of Nicaea chose the NT letters on a whim, which would doubt the infallibility and inerrancy of scripture as God's Word. So, I have to disagree. Another topic was the Crusades. There were over 400 years of provacation of Islam's huge military conquest. Thousands of Europeans were going on pilgrimages every year to Jerusalem. And the Moslims were attacking their caravans and slaughtering them and stealing their goods, just like Mohammad had. Many Europeans were captured and made slaves by the Moslims, as the Koran mandates. The poor condition of these slaves was noted by European priests, such as Peter the Hermit, who began preaching against this publicly in France. The Moslims had attacked and slaughtered millions of people in all the towns and cities of Byzantium throughout North Africa, the Mid East, Spain, Persia and India. This reduced the Byzantium Empire to just the city of Constantinople which was about to be overrun. The Emporer appealed to the Roman Pope for assistance. This began the first crusade. This was not because the pope felt in the mood to conquer the poor innocent peace-loving Moslims and steal their land, as the narrator suggests. And the way that warfare was done for thousands of years was to first offer a city to surrender and treat them well if they did. But if they refused and mocked and put up an extreme fight that caused the loss of many men's lives, then the conquered were killed. This was the case in Jerusalem. Winning people to Christ should have been the goal. Easier said than done. A time for peace and a time for war. Also, this presentation spoke of the Mormons in a very positive light, as if they were a true Christian church. But the reality is that they taught that there were millions of gods and Elohim was just one of them. Joseph Smith taught that god was once a man like we are and he evolved into godhood, just like we can. This of course is another gospel and not a true Christian church. And finally, they covered the Liberation Theology issue. Extreme poor and extreme rich in Latin America certainly justifies a call to change. But Liberation Theology is in reality Marxism, which is atheistic, whose goal is to destroy Christian-based democracy and free enterprise which offers a better standard of living for all with opportunity and individual rights. But even after my critique, I still found this to be an excellent six hour walk through Christian history, with superb photos of places, statues, paintings and events. Very informative. I highly recommend it.
