Movie Reviews of Chopper

Movie Review: A Great Movie... But Not For Everyone
Summary: 4 Stars

Chopper was a very good movie, but it is not for everyone. It is a bit difficult to understand in some parts, I know I had to watch it twice to fully understand the movie. It is a frightening but funny look into the life of Mark "Chopper" Read. Eric Bana is magnificant as Chopper Read. If you do not like the story line of the film you will at least love Bana's performance. I was amazed by the way Bana was able to change from a madman to being almost child-like. You will see this in one of the first scenes when Chopper repeatedly stabbes an inmate, Keithy George, in the face and neck, then walks off and turns back to see him bleeding to death and asks in a heartbroken voice "You alright Keithy?" The sudden concern in Chopper's voice is sad but funny at the same time. I was not sure if I should laugh or cry. Watching this movie will really make you wonder what goes on in the Mind of Chopper Read. I really enjoyed this movie and recommened it to my stepdad because it seemed like his kind of movie, but neither he nor my mom enjoyed it as I did. I do not recommend this to anyone under 18 because of the intense violence and very strong language. If you like dark comedies this is definately a movie for you.

Movie Review: One of the best Australian movies in years
Summary: 4 Stars

Chopper is a surprisingly exhilarating and tightly paced fictionalised biography of one of Australia's most famous modern crims, the charismatic but unpredictably violent Mark `Chopper' Read. Some attempt has been made to stick to the verifiable facts, but the film is aware that Read is one who never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn and instead the film focuses on his genuinely mercurial personality: this is the kind of man who'll come round for a friendly drink, shoot you, rob you and then drive you to hospital. Eric Bana is truly amazing in the lead, showing a range and power and sheer star quality that serves the part rather than submerges it that Hollywood has yet to properly tap into. You only have to check out the interview with the real 'Chopper' included on the DVD to see just how on the money his performance (not just an impersonation) is. Andrew Dominik's impressive direction is stylish and adventurous without ever losing grip of his material, whether shooting coke-fuelled dialog scenes at high speed in a brilliant rendition of a cocaine rush or playing Chopper's account of a murder as a nursery rhyme. It may be a bit strong for some tastes, but this is great stuff.

Movie Review: Amazingly realistic
Summary: 4 Stars

Chopper is a great film. Andrew Dominik, the director, did a splendid job. The film seems so realistic, the brutality, the dialogues, the places, the characters, it's all so well adapted to the kind of movie that Chopper is. The acting is really amazing, especially from Eric Bana, who plays Chopper. This man has the talent to make every single feeling of his character visible, and realistic. The violence, while being pretty graphic and brutal, isn't gratuitous or exaggerated. The violence "hits" the viewer, just like he was feeling the pain, it's very well reproduced. The character of Chopper is interesting, as a man who's trying to be THE criminal. This reminds me of films such as C'est arrivé près de chez vous (or Man Bites Dog, in english). This has a part of the anti-media message of Natural Born Killers, many similarities to the acting from Goodfellas and Casino, and a very personal touch, that you won't find in a lot of films. I had a great time watching this, and if you want to have a good one too, see it! I give it 8/10 (and an 8½ would have been better). Andrew Dominik and Eric Bana...check them out, they have future!

Movie Review: Chopper: The Joe Martin Review
Summary: 4 Stars

Chopper is the chaotic tale of Australian criminal extrordinaire Mark "Chopper" Read. He is a brutal man, but at the same time quite likeable in a strange way.
Viewers should be prepared for some rather disturbing images including but not limited to apendage amputation, stabbings, shootings and the list pretty much just goes on, and on, and on. You are taken from Chopper's early days as a mad man in prison to his later days as an even madder man outside of prison. This guy was and apparently still is a class one lunatic. I said earlier he is strangely likeable. I never said I would want to meet him.
Eric Bana in his freshman effort, shines. I see good things in the future for this astute young actor. I also enjoyed his role in the otherwise rather disapointing Black Hawk Down (not dissing that movie, it is good, I just wanted better.), as well as his role in the Hulk.
Also on the DVD look out for interviews with the real life Chopper. Almost as entertaining as the movie.

Yes I liked the Hulk. Now get off my back.

Movie Review: A Black Life
Summary: 4 Stars

This is easily one of the most disturbing, and yet intriguing films I have watched in recent history. Andrew Dominik has created a tragically empathetic examination of professional criminal Chopper Read. Being the debut of the filmmaker that would later go on to make the brilliant 'Assassination of Jessie James by the Coward Robert Ford', this film was a sublime thesis on the psychotically lonely. The former stand-up comedian Eric Bana makes his acting debut alongside Dominik and easily proves his ability to perform, regardless of the text. A truly remarkable film accredited to two up-in-comers. Be warned, it does deserve its R rating, because with in the film, you witness male nudity, (most likely prosthetic), numerous murders, stabbings, and the title character chopping off his ear. But all this is necessary to examine a psychotic killer. Great filmmaking.
