Movie Reviews of ChopperMovie Review: Bloody F!?*@%&%$!&*%?ing Brilliant! Summary: 4 Stars
Those of you out there who have not seen this film yet,you are in for a wild tale. Not only is this film a kick in the A%$@!? to watch, but it based on a real actual person, and real events that did occur.Of course there were some artistic liberties taken,as this almost always occurs when novels are transformed to film, but this one was done exceptionally well.
Mark Brandon "Choper" Read is the last outlaw/vigilante to my knowlege, and would'nt ya know...he resides on my favorite continent on the face of the earth...OZ.This was man who went out and pretty much did what he wanted to those who typically preyed upon us smaller/defensless folk, and tor'em a new one.Make no mistake,Chopper is not glamorized in anyway. He is a very crafty, intelliget&scarry individual. He seems tame on the interviews that are on the extra's of the dvd,but he is'nt someone to cross, because anything you ever thought of doing to this guy,he's already thought of,and the thing is with him,is you never know what he's going to do.
He dispised drugs&drug dealers,so that is were he gets his deep dislike for them. However, without being a hypocryt...one cannot come to such conclusions without "experiencing it"and he admits to that more or less, along with many other incidents durring his narration of the film,if you choose to watch the film that format. He is certainly an interesting character, and Eric Banna's protrayal of him is so good,it is difficult to to tell between the real Chopper Read&his film persona.Banna went through great extents to be Chopper,so much to the point that he packed on extra pounds to acheive it.You'd never know it was him by looking at him doned with his prison tats, gold tooth&scarry, yet charismatic persona. This is one of the best films Australia has put out, only a few others in recent years can be put in the same catagory.Chopper is wildly entertaining, and funny...sometimes in a frightening&entertaining way.You can't help but love this character, even when he is at his worst. You will not be disappointed watching Chopper, and adding this to your dvd film collection only enrichens it.
Movie Review: Hard, Fast and Fun! Summary: 4 Stars
Chopper is an amazing piece of filmmaking in nearly every regard far exceeding the limitations some would impose on it due to its vernacular. I could only laugh at a review that dismissed it as sophomoric tripe and attempts supporting his argument citing the film's lack of realism in violence.
Although based on a real man this is storytelling cinema not documentary. There is an obvious element of gross exaggeration in most of the scenes of violence in Chopper, which serve a purpose (or, more specifically, several purposes). The title character is obviously incapable of telling the truth - perhaps of even hearing the truth.
It is, at first, difficult to figure out why so many are drawn to Chopper (and not at all difficult to see why so many wish him dead). Within the first few moments Eric Bana establishes Chopper's character in a way that reveals the off kilter charisma that some simply cannot resist. Those Chopper seems to get along with best are those on the periphery, those who don't invest too much whom he nonetheless seems intent on impressing. Those too involved with him likewise are locked into his doom as no one is able to keep up with the mythological figure Chopper has invented himself into.
Darkly humorous, brutal, yet not without pathos the film rightly focuses on its central character and lives up to the unlikely hero's motto: never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn. "Chopper" is a fascinating film filled several amazing performances even in smaller roles. Likewise is it filled with wonderful moments that pop right off the screen, as when Chopper's friend, Jimmy's chain smoking, junkie, white trash, pregnant fiancée stumbles to the floor to pick up a sawed off shot gun in the hallway. Genius!
It's violent nature, raw language and seemingly rotten-to-the core hero make this a film not for everyone, but those who get this sort of thing are guaranteed rich rewards.
Movie Review: Eric Bana 'IS' Chopper. Summary: 4 Stars
Before having watched this film I never really had much of an idea of who Chopper was and i was interested in seeing the film from all the little things id heard, but I have got to say I never expected to get as much out of the film as I did. Chopper is dimentionally entertaining and opened me up to this whole new world of the once psycho Mark Chopper Reid.
Andrew Dominik tells the story in a very new and interesting way, the film is very conversational and seems to highlight only the most substantial moments in Reids life. Through many outstanding performances the film is made very realistic and is as if your standing right there watching it.
Now i've got to add credit to Eric Bana for his performance in the film, It is absolutely incredible in my opinion, one of the best performances to date. When you watch it its as if he has just shapeshifted himself magically to mould another person, he is nothing alike to the person that he is in real life its awesome. Its a no wonder after him doing this film he has never had to do another audition for other films. BRILLIANT!
This film along with comedy, drama and the true story telling side of it, is accually realistically bloody so it aint for the faint hearted but nether the less the movie is great and most will enjoy it. Ive watched it three times since i purchased it just last week. The films only flaw i felt was i didnt feel i knew enough of what there is to know about the character, but i would guess that would have something to do with a lesser budget that the film had, but anyways the film is great and i grant it five thumbs up and recommend it to you. Enjoy!
Movie Review: check it out Summary: 4 Stars
Well about 6 months ago a few friends called me up talking about this movie named Chopper. Not really knowing much I said why not and decided to give it a shot. When we got there ,I saw this awesome poster of some crazy looking guy with two guns.I thought "now this is going to be pretty cool".We went in ,the movie started ,and things seemed to go a little different than I thought.A little slow at first(about 10 mins. in)but then dismissed the idea of this being a total shoot em up type movie. You know seeing the poster and all.It actually turned into a thinking persons movie, that gave you a look at a person who is different ,but not totally crazy, only as crazy as Chopper himself wanted everybody to believe.Right then and there ,I thought this movie applies to every person that never was popular or the person who was never famous but wants it real bad.Chopper really isn't that bad of a guy( a little screwed in the head)but he just wants something, and this is his sick journey into it.It's crazy because everything he does ,he appologizes for it like he never wanted to do it in the first place, but he just had to.Everybody can apply this to their life in some way, in some part. Overall, this is an awsome movie that I highly recomend. It's just crazy, and it's real gutsy for somebody to write about stuff that really applies to everyday life(minus doing harmfull things to people).Hey the guy just wanted attention and that is what he got.The only reason I didn't give this movie 5 stars is because, It isn,t way great ,but it is awsome on a different level.
Movie Review: Bana's unbelievable physical transformation!! Summary: 4 Stars
There are plenty of reviews here that deal with the content and storyline of "Chopper". But I want to discuss Bana's amazing physical transformation to play this part. Not since Robert DeNiro's chameleon-like transformation into Jake LaMotta in "Raging Bull" has an actor so thoroughly entrenched himself in the physicality of a role. Bana made his early career as a stand-up comic Down Under, but look at what he has done here! Watch "Black Hawk Down" to catch the "normal-looking" Bana, then watch "Chopper", his earlier film, to see the lengths he went to to gain some 80 pounds of fat/thickness to play this hulk (no 2003 movie pun intended -- okay, maybe it is intended) of a thug named Mark Brandon "Chopper" Read, one of Australia's most conspicuously (in)famous criminals. At the start of the movie, and early in the filming of the movie, Bana/Chopper is a physically imposing yet fit figure. As the years pack on the pounds, Bana gained the girth to mirror Chopper's. A truly amazing and brave acting choice! Now read other reviews if you want opinions on the film (I liked it, by the way). But somebody tell DeNiro that Bana is close on his tail.
