Movie Reviews of Chill Out Scooby-Doo! - Original Movie

Movie Review: Doesn't Follow "Pirates Ahoy" Well.
Summary: 2 Stars

Giving you a brief rundown of where I stand, I think "Zombie Island" is the best. I consider "Witch's Ghost," "Legend of the Vampire," and "Pirates Ahoy" the great runner ups. I did like "Aloha Scooby Doo" and "Where's My Mummy?" I have respect for the "Loch Ness Monster." "Alien Invasion" and "Monster of Mexico" had their moments. I did not like "Cyber Chase." After the great "Pirates Ahoy," I was pleased to receive this 11th chapter as a gift. Sadly, I found it to fall short of "Pirates Ahoy" in many ways. The story starts with Fred, Velmah, and Daphne enjoying a vacation in France. But somehow, Scooby and Shaggy have ended up in the frozen lands of the abominable snowman. So Fred, Daphne, and Velmah have their vacation plans changed (as usual). Shaggy and Scooby also meet some archaeologists who seem to be afraid of the possible presence of the abominable snowman. I don't deny that there are some good moments. Scooby and Shaggy run into Del Chilman from the "Loch Ness Monster." He is now a weatherman. He is still a bit strange, but he has mellowed significantly. Without giving away the ending, there is a cute deviation from the typical monster formula. But one character is made out to be the bad guy, and he really didn't do anything illegal. Overall, this lacks the tight unity, misleads, criminal activity, comical moments, and surprises of most other Scooby movies. I don't deny it had its moments, and it was nice to see Del Chilman again. Still, it was a sad way to follow the excellent "Pirates Ahoy."

Genre: Children's Video
Rating: NR
Release Date: 4-SEP-2007
Media Type: DVD
An original, animated feature set in the frozen wilds of the Himalayas, Chill Out, Scooby Doo! finds best buddies Shaggy and Scooby-Doo on their way to join Freddie, Daphne, and Velma in Paris when they're waylaid by an ambitious hunter out to snare the abominable snowman. Figuring Shaggy and Scooby, as charter members of Mystery, Inc., can find their way to a monster, the hunter pursues the legendary Yeti from one angle while a research scientist and his assistant try to get to the creature from another. Terribly inscrutable about the snowman is the High Lama of Shangri-La, who has his own reasons for keeping a sacred shrine to the Yeti. Caught between these various agendas, of course, are Shaggy and Scooby, who are a long way from Freddie and the others right when they need them most. Yes, it's a typical Scooby adventure, with multiple chase scenes, supernatural phenomena that isn't quite what it seems, and plenty of Scooby snacks devoured by the ever-ravenous Shaggy and his canine best friend. Longtime fans of the various Scooby series and younger kids catching up on Mystery, Inc. culture will certainly appreciate the story. Casey Kasem, as ever, voices Shaggy, though one can hear him getting a little raspy with age. (A tip of the hat to Chill Out, Scooby-Doo!'s producers for sticking with Kasem; these shows certainly wouldn't be the same without him.) --Tom Keogh
