Movie Review: Children of Heaven is a great film!
Summary: 5 Stars
I highly recommend this film. I have seen it twice, once alone with my husband, and we loved it. The second time, we showed it to around twenty college- and grad school-age kids, and they ALL loved it too. Since then, my 69-year-old mother has seen it, and she thought it was amazing as well! One of the many things that's interesting about this film is that somehow this director makes you care intensely for the young kids in the story. There's real drama in a shoe floating down a gutter, an out-of-control bicycle, or a kids' foot race. I also like that this is the kind of film that can help people with biases (and isn't that all of us on some level?) reconsider some of our preconceived ideas: bias against all Iranians, bias again films with subtitles, bias against the poor. When I say "family movie," I mean a movie that the whole family can watch without any of the members wishing that they were somewhere else, and I do NOT mean that it is boring or stupid or overly sentimental. My 11-year-old nephew had just watched Dickie Roberts with his friends and was telling me how funny and great it was; he thought Baran and the Color of Paradise were too depressing and pointless. Then, he watched the Children of Heaven with his mother and me; he was glued to the TV and did not protest once the whole time. He would never admit to this out of the fear that he will be forced to watch more depressing foreign movies with subtitles, but I got the feeling that he will remember this movie for many more years than Dickie Roberts.Movie Review: Brilliant film.

If you want to learn more about this region and it's people, watch this movie. If you want to understand that not all middle-east Arabs are militant fanatics, watch this movie. What we see on the news and read in the paper is so narrow. This is a window to a world that, in one viewing, taught me what I should have already known.
It's a beautiful movie with such brilliant colors I couldn't believe it, about the simple predicament of a brother and sister. It's also a real eye-opener that shows us we are all the same, with the same struggles and hopes for our loved ones. With this one movie, I stopped painting with so broad a brush as far as Arabs go. I wish everyone in America would see this.

Great movie! It is a hidden gem being a beautiful Iranian film AND a film where the two main characters are young children--the supporting roles are played by adults. A very interesting perspective that anyone who has been misunderstood as a child can relate to...a very touching and real film without being overly sentimental purely for sentimentality's sake. I love the scenes and insights to the Iranian school system...very different from the many California schools I have taught that are filled with too many kids who talk back and have little to no respect for teachers/adults.
Great movie. Very refreshing. I have showed it to many classes both high school and college.

Children of Heaven is a beautiful film that deals with a boy (9) and his sister (7) and their adventures over a lost pair of shoes. The film scores in the simplicity of the plot, executed with supreme performances, art direction and cinematography. The characterisation is wonderful; one can actually empathise with the siblings and their desperation to keep the secret. The chemistry between them can bring tears to your eyes. Majid Majidi has used basic elements of film-making sans glamour or loud background music or other tools of emotional manipulation, to narrate the story.
This movie will be loved by one and all. Go grab your DVD!
