Movie Reviews of Child's Play (Chucky's 20th Birthday Edition)Movie Review: A great DVD of a horror classic! Summary: 5 Stars
Charles Lee Ray (Brad Douriff) is a voodoo obsessed homicial maniac known as the Lakeshore Strangler who is one of Chicago's most notorious criminals. He was chased and gunned down by a police officer named Detective Norris (Chris Surandon), he transfers his soul into something before he died. A 6 year old boy named Andy (Alex Vincient) just had a birthday and his mother Karen (Catherine Hicks) buys him a "Good Guy" doll named Chucky as it was the best gift he has ever gotten. But Andy has gotten more then what he has recieved for there has been some horrific murders and accidents lately, it turns out the doll is possessed by the spirit of Charles Lee Ray as it terrorizes the young boy and his mother as it wants to transfer it's soul into the young boy.
Exciting and stylish 1988 supernatural horror thriller that gave birth to one of horror cinema's greatest villains known as Chucky. The film started as an idea by Don Manicini and David Kerischner (Fresh off "An American Tail") based on the huge Cabbage Patch Kids craze of the 80's as the film serves as a metaphore on child consumerism. Mancini and Kerischner were inspired by films like "Trilogy of Terror" and "Magic" with Anthony Hopkins mixing it up with the whole "Cabbage Patch Kids" metaphore then adding some voodoo elements to create a movie unlike any evil doll movie before. The film co-stars John Colvin of the 70's "Incredible Hulk" fame and the performances are quite good including the sexy Hicks as the hot mother of a child who's terrorized by a doll, the special effects of it's time including on Chucky still hold up after all these years and has stood the test of time as it's still popular among audiences. The film has became a hit in 1988 as it was one of the freshest and most unique horror movies of all time with solid direction by Tom Holland (Fresh off "Fright Night") and of course some jolting terror throughout that plays as a non-stop suspenser that thrills to the end.
This DVD is the stuff fans's dreams are made off! previously released in a bareboned full screen version with only a trailer, this DVD provides just the right stuff for horror fans. This contains an excellent widescreen and remastered version with cool extras like Trailer, audio commentaries, scene commentary by Chucky himself, featurettes, still photo gallery and trailers to other MGM/Fox releases.
