Movie Reviews of Chicago - Live by RequestMovie Review: "THEY DONT MAKE BANDS LIKE CHICAGO ANYMORE" Summary: 5 Stars
Chicago performs beautifully at this concert in NYC. I admit the requests were at times annoying and of course the tributes by Dick Clark and Jay Leno, David Letterman, Sopranos and of course the annoying MCing by Marc McEwen. Besides the negatives Chicago performs nicely and really show why they lasted all these years. Jason Scheff does an adequate job singing Peter Cetera songs, I wish reviews about Scheffs singing performance on this dvd were'nt so harsh. Chicago did thier best to replace Peter Cetera, but it is hard to replace a legend like Peter Cetera. Jim Pankow and Walter Parazaider do not even mention Peter Cetera or Danny Seraphine during thier interviews with McEwen. I guess Cetera and Seraphine have bad blood with Chicago. I wish they would work out thier differences and perform together or make a new cd, wishful thinking. Terry Kath was mentioned an that was a beautiful thing , especially when Walter Parazaider talks about the story of meeting Jimi Hendrix and how Hendrix said Kath was a better gutarist than he was. This dvd watched on your regular tv will sound like Chicago performing in a fish tank. You need to watch it with a theatre system, this dvd was ment to be heard on a 5.1 theatre system, that is why Chicagos performance sounds like it is enclosed in a fish tank when watching it on a regular tv. The list of songs is great at 92 minutes long, In the immortal words of Dick Clark " They dont make bands like Chicago anymore."
Movie Review: It's The Musicianship Summary: 5 Stars
There are quite a few reviews of this concert and widely varying opinions. You have to put Chicago in proper perspective though to give the band and this DVD a fair shake. This is no longer a band that generates new hits and they don't pretend to be. Their continued popularity owes more to the enduring melodies and powerful sound of the hits they wrote and the generous number of them. That devoted fans attend their live performances year after year in the U.S. and abroad is testimony to just how timeless many of the songs are and how personable the band members remain. That said, and contrary to some of the criticisms made, I think the sound of this recording is remarkable. You can hear every blow from the horns, every note from the base, and every beat from the drum rolls. Add to that a beautiful stage design, great lighting and filming, the intimacy of a small venue, and handsome graphics. What the heck more do you want? I've seen this group live and can attest that, as a musical experience and engineering accomplishment, the DVD is better. Yes, Champlin looks like he needs an ex-lax every time he sings. And Scheff mangles the lyrics on (of all songs) "Dialogue." But these are the dysfunctions that family members overlook, and these guys really are family. Watch the concert and you'll see that Chicago's musicianship is still of the highest caliber.
Movie Review: A Must Own for Chicago Fans Summary: 5 Stars
I have to disagree with many of the reviews I have read. I am a huge Chicago fan and I love this DVD. There are a few off key vocal moments here and there, but this is a live show. If you want perfection, listen to the studio stuff where they had all day to go back and correct things like that.
As far as the sound quality, I guess if you are a sound engineer you will probably pick out some things that could be better. For the rest of us, it sounds great!
For the Jason Scheff haters out there, I have just a few words, "Question 67 and 68!" He rocks that song! It's not Jason's fault that Peter Cetera decided to leave the band and drift into obscurity doing mushy ballads. The band moved on, and they did it in a big way with Jason. I think he sounds GREAT!
I also thought Bill Champlin's vocals still sound really good. He is still hitting those high notes in "Make Me Smile" at his age!
Overall, the music, the sound, the horns (My God The Horns!!!!) all sound great.
If you are a Chicago fan, this is a MUST OWN! $20 with shipping? Who can complain???!!!
Movie Review: Why isn't this band in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yet??? Summary: 5 Stars
A&E's Live By Request DVD is a must have for all fans of Chicago, whether casual or die-hards. The concert weaves through 35 years of Chicago music. The four original guys share some cool stories about the band history and they also pay tribute to the late, great Terry Kath. There are some great fan stories too from the callers/emailers. There are also some special congratulatory tributes from the cast of the Sopranos, Dick Clark, Jay Leno and Regis Philbin too ! Some may be disappointed because perhaps the "b-sides" are not requested, but this is true with all A&E Live By Request programs that I have seen. I firmly believe that the "requested" set list is pre-determined so as not to "stump the artist". Don't forget this is a live show. You can imagine if someone requested a song an artist hasn't played or rehearsed in 20 years or so......nobody wants to be embarassed!! Regardless, I, for one, am happy to have this DVD in my collection. And if you get a chance to catch them on tour...DO IT !! You will NOT be disappointed!!!
Movie Review: Chicago - Live By Request Summary: 5 Stars
Fantastic DVD!!! I taped the show last year & have watched it dozens of times. As soon as I saw it was available on DVD, I ordered it.As a sound tech for over 35 years and as a drummer, I know this performance and the audio balance are not "perfect" (no "live" performance ever is). But a live performance shows the group's personalities that a studio recording never can show. This program does it very, very well. It's obvious that the members, especially the orignal four, enjoy what they're doing and enjoy doing it with each other (even after 35 years together). While I liked Chicago's music before, after I saw the show, I became a FAN. If anyone in a band wants to emulate how a band looks and works onstage, this is the video to study.
