Movie Reviews of Cheyenne AutumnMovie Review: Western Summary: 3 Stars
I really like this older western! It tells a story of the Cheyenne indians and how they were treated by the soldiers and the white people. Richard Widmark played a great part in this movie along with other cast like Caroll Baker. This is a worthwild movie to add to a collection. James Steward had a short bit part in this.
Movie Review: Way too much boring dialog, not enough action. Summary: 2 Stars
I've only watched about one-half of this movie.. many years ago. The movie happens to have two of my favorite "Western" actors, Jimmy Stewart and Richard Widwark. The one thing I remember is that there was a LOT of boring conversation between Stewart and Widmark. There was one scene where they were riding side by side and talking. The conversation was just jibberish. This scene almost put me to sleep. And up to that point, there was very little action in the movie. That boring conversation was what convinced me to stop watching. I realize that my review doesn't contain a lot of information. But I will say this: If you suffer from insomnia, watch this movie at bedtime. You will be sawing logs within 20 minutes.
Movie Review: Whaaaat?? Summary: 2 Stars
This was I guess supposed to be a serious story of the awful treatment of the American Indians- and the first and last thirds of the movie do that quite well. HOWEVER, right in the middle of the story-the middle third- is a total comic western. It has only the slightest connection to the rest of the story and totally destroys the mood and feeling of the main story. It's almost like they had this unfinshed comedy western footage with expensive actors that they had to use up so they just spliced it in! Sorry, no thumbs up! Two stars only for the main story OR for the comedy, not the whole movie.
Movie Review: Geographically bizarre Summary: 1 Stars
Not being familiar with the historical background, I took Ford at his visual word when he showed the Cheyenne Indians jumping the reservation in Monument Valley.
I've been there a few times and recognized a lot of the geological features.
He fails to mention that they're actually fleeing Oklahoma - which looks nothing like northeastern Arizona - in their trek to their homelands in Wyoming.
So it was particularly jarring when it appeared they were closing in on Dodge City, Kans. Huh? Why would you go to Kansas on a hike from the Four Corners region to Wyoming?
This is compounded by the fact that most of their journey takes place in terrain that looks like (because it is) Arizona and Utah. Month after month these poor raggedy devils are slogging along the dusty trail and never getting out of Monument Valley! It got to be laughable.
The James Stewart/Dodge City interlude had me wondering if I'd somehow switched DVDs and was now watching Blazing Saddles.
By the time we saw the first locomotive, introducing the passage where they cross the presumably heavily guarded railroad, I halfway expected to see the French Underground blow up the train.
Monument Valley is a wonderful setting for a western, but Ford would have us believe the entire American West looks like highway 163 from Kayenta to Goulding. I can't decide whether it's insulting or just laughable.
Bottom line - this is a goofy failed attempt to tell a seriously tragic story. One more example of why you shouldn't get your history from movies.
Movie Review: Suckered Into Watching This Summary: 1 Stars
Cheyenne Autumn came out at the same time as the ponderous Cleopatra with Elizabeth Taylor. they were both advertised as lavishly expensive "epics" and i couldn't wait to see both of them.
Huge disappoointment! Similarities between both films:
1.Big stars who phone in performances. Everyone in CA seemed to play a parody of him/herself. I don't have to name them; you know who they are.
2.All visual, with scripts that distort true history (All Indians do NOT look alike. It appears the peaceful Navajo were playing the warrior Cheyenne! I HATE it when Caucasions play Indians and try to emulate what they think an Indian talks like, with the stilted English and bad sign language. Oh, and Wyoming is not close to Monument valley! It's as if the director used Florida as a location for a movie set in New York! Aaaarrrrghhhhh!! Also the screenwriters refused to move the story along except at a quadraplegic turtle's pace. I could have sworn this movie was 4 hours long, but another reviewer put it at 2.5 hours! the Wyatt Erp thing? More like "Destry". I expected Marlene Dietrich to show up at any moment singing one of her terrible torch songs. John Ford got such a reputation for being a genius, both at scriptwriting and directing. God help us if this was genius!
3. You stumble out of the theatre wondering what you just saw and why did you waste your time and money. A good one for a Terrible Movie Party!
