Movie Reviews of Cheaper By the DozenMovie Review: A Movie Firing On All Cylinders! Summary: 5 Stars
From the opening scene, Steve Martin coming in from a long run, then sitting on the lumpy bed (actually the lumbs were some of his twelve kids under the covers), to the rolling of the credits, this film has it all.The viewer does not have to come from a large family to identify with all of the problems the Baker family faces. The move from the small town life to a much more urban (not too urban though) environment is a shock to the entire family. I think this movie flows quite well; touches on many different characters (probably the largest and most actively involved cast of any recent movie); and has a very important message: Sometimes your dreams aren't really what you think they are. This is not a sophisticated comedy geared towards the typical "gourmet coffee drinker - analyze the movie to make sure it talks about human suffering enough" movie-goer, but more towards the crowd who enjoys life for the simple fact they're alive and kicking. Steve Martin always rises to the role. Hilary Duff, who I normally can't stand, did a good job, too. The rest of the cast seemed to compliment each other exceedingly well. The filming (moving shots without breaks) was superb! The school scenes could have been filmed live at any high school; in other words, very realistic. I'm not sure how someone can give this movie less than five stars...Maybe they thought it was supposed to be a Western? I say, "Buy this film, sit down with the family, and enjoy a nice buttery and oversalted bucket of popcorn while you watch a great flick." But hey, that's just my opinion... :-) www.therunninggirl.com
Movie Review: The chaos and calamity of a house of (altogether) 14! Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent movie for the young and the old. It's incredibly moving, hilarious in just about all aspects and makes you realise just how important family is above the materialism of life.
The acting from the kids is surprising and sincere. They are believable and really do show the emotion, which would be hard for some kids to concentrate on in a drama role, but they pull it off perfectly. Little Mark Baker is just the most adorable character! He'll steal your heart away.
At first, this movie didn't impress me much. It seemed a little cheesy, too much Hollywood and not enough depth. On second viewing, I realised the great potential this movie really had.
Unlike some films, they really do try to give the viewer something worthwhile to learn from and get something out of the movie. Something that will carry on and be remembered long after you leave the cinema.
Perhaps some parents may get some insight through watching this film and realise the way their kids may be feeling.
It is one movie which doesn't ever seem to grow old; as funny as the first time and always a pleasure to watch.
If you're looking for lighthearted yet moving comedy with a line up of great actors and boredom-ceasing potential, this is the movie for you. Give it a try :)
Movie Review: Cheapest By The Dozen Summary: 5 Stars
Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt corral a wild herd of rampaging children in Cheaper by the Dozen. The Bakers never set out to have twelve children, it just sort of happened, and as the movie opens they are living in a chaotic but harmonious discord in a old rambling house in the country. When Kate Baker, Bonnie Hunt, gets a book deal for her chronicle of their abundant family life, she also gets drawn into a book tour, leaving Tom, Steve Martin, to run the house and cope with his new high pressure job as a football coach. Naturally, chaos erupts, bring the family to the brink of meltdown. Directed by Shawn Levy at Fox Home Entertainment, guarantees the crowd for nearly two hours.
It seems to me that the movie is a little uncomfortable and stereotypical that the family lives in a farmhouse, and while having twelve kids is definitely a rarity in today's society, they could have gone with the house being more modern, even in a small town. Also, Bonnie Hunt does not really help with taking care of the kids, also most of the kids are very unlikeable, which makes it no surprise to me that when they move into town that no one likes them. Finally, with all the celebrities playing kids, it feels more like a big publicity stunt than anything else.
Movie Review: Funny Movie With a Message Summary: 5 Stars
Cheaper by the Dozen is a very funny movie. It is typical Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt is a good match for him. Most of the humor is slapstick and you can't help but laugh. The 12 kids especially the younger group are all good little actors and create an atmosphere of total chaos when mom leaves to go on a book tour and dad get tied up with his new coaching job. With all its laughs, the movie looks at some serious issues facing today's families. Mom and dad now have their dream jobs but are unable to balance caring for the kids and the demands of those jobs. They are torn between family needs and unsympathetic bosses. Oldest daughter Nora (Piper Perabo)has moved out and is living with her boyfriend Hank(Ashton Kutcher). The parents have to deal with her wanting to sleep with him when they come to help babysit. The kids have their own ways to handle the situation and with hilarious results. Hilary Duff is very believable as a vain teenager and Forrest Landis does a great job with Mark, the kid who seems to feel the most neglected. He reminds me of a cross between Mayberry's Opie and Harry Potter. If you want an evening of laughter, by all means see this movie.
Movie Review: Best Steve Martin Since Father of the Bride! Summary: 5 Stars
I have to say that family videos is his best. I felt that they put much thought into who would play the characters in this movie. It was brilliant that they had such recognizable teenagers playing the older parts. It drew in the crowd. People want to see a face they can recognize and be comfortable with. Tom Welling (so hot might I add), Pyper, Hilary, Bonnie, and Steve give us this. We know their work and we know the deliver with their best. After we were drawn in by those people we know we fell in love with the kids. Aside from that scene that we all know was completely taken from the Brady Bunch Movie at the end it was GREAT! I laughed all the way through it. The acting was superb. It was predictable yet original. I loved the way they really brought an old movie into modern times. It is definitely one of my favorite movies. These kids that made their debut in this movie have a long rode ahead of them and I hope to see them again soon in future films. Also a bonus for you Hilary fans, she does sing some of the music in the film. I like her voice so for those of you who agree with me on that it is a nice addition.
