Movie Reviews of Chattahoochee

Movie Review: Chattahoochie (Gary Oldman is the bomb)
Summary: 4 Stars

Gary Olman, man what an actor, for a brit he sure sounds southern. If you are a GAry Oldman fan like I am this is the movie for your collection of his flicks. Dennis Hopper has a good role as his confidant, and does a great job at that.

The downer to this movie is that it isnt pleasannt, as in, not a happy movie. If you are looking for a pick me up this is not the one to watch. It is based on a true story and thus makes it even more depressing to watch. The end is pretty good although I would have liked it to be a hair more explanatory of what happened to the characters after.

Movie Review: Moving
Summary: 4 Stars

A moving film - was the best about psychiatric disorders IMHO until "A Beautiful Mind" came along. Gary Oldman - what a performance!

Movie Review: Chattahoochee - what is crazy? what is right & wrong?
Summary: 3 Stars

So granted this is an older movie, so it's not going to have that modern movie feel, but the concept is great: a Korean War veteran shoots out the neighborhood in an attempt to get murdered by police so his wife can collect insurance money (although she doesn't know about this plan). It goes awry and he ends up in this medieval mental prison ward out in the middle of nowhere. There were no rules or rights for any of the men in this camp and once the main character sees how they are being mistreated, he sets out to do something about it, losing everything he ever had (including his mind at some points) in order to bring about a change.

Gary Oldman in ANY role is beyond amazing, but to give him a character like this is always a treat and privilege to watch. But it is a little dated now, so I'd say only watch if you are a Gary fan.

(It should be noted to be on the lookout for the "Shoe Man" - aka the crazy guy obsessed with his shoe-- if you do buy this movie... he is hilarious!).

Movie Review: Oldman is brilliant
Summary: 3 Stars

Gary Oldman becomes whatever character he plays, be it Emmett Foley here, Beethoven, or Count Dracula. He is always totally believeable. Pamela Martin is also quite good in her roll as his sister Earlene, but Francis McDormand, a normally adept actress, seemed wooden and uncomfortable as his wife Mae Foley. Beyond the performances, however, the movie seems like a series of unrelated vignettes. You just know that a lot of it must have ended up on the cutting room floor. The pace is so slow that only Oldman's performance maintains interest for long periods. The ending comes off like a last-minute cut-and-paste job to give the movie a bit of a happy ending. How historically accurate it is I cannot say, but Chris Calhoun, the real-life basis for Emmett Foley, says about 60%.
