Movie Reviews of Charley Varrick

Movie Review: Not Pan-and-Scan
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a terrific film and deserves a terrific release in its intended aspect ratio. However, I think the reviewers who state that it is cropped or panned-and-scanned are wrong. To me it looks as if the film was shot open matte and the DVD release includes the whole image. This is true for many Universal DVDs, especially those for 70s films.

Charley Varrick was clearly framed for a wider image, especially the action scenes, and a re-release with the proper AR would be welcome. That said, with this release you are not losing any part of the image, but gaining an extra, unnecessary part. So this is a flawed product but not as flawed as you might think. If you want an anamorphic version of the film, invest in a region free player and pick up the UK release from Amazon.co.uk. Even with the exchange rate and increased shipping the disc will cost you about what a new DVD of the US release would here.

Movie Review: Main Character Undermines Film
Summary: 3 Stars

"Charley Varrick" has every reason to work but it just left me cold. Don Siegel at the helm. Walter Matthau in the title role. Stalwarts like Joe Don Baker, John Vernon, Andy Robinson(Scorpio in "Dirty Harry"), and Sheree North in supporting roles. Now Matthau has proven himself as a versatile actor, not only in his curmudgeonly comic persona but also in dramatic roles. I just didn't buy him as a hardbitten type here. The film's basic premise, a caper where a group of thieves inadvertently steal laundered mob money, isn't much to write home about. "Charley Varrick" is certainly watchable but a tad of a disappointment.

Movie Review: Interesting film, bare-bones DVD
Summary: 3 Stars

I don't know why I liked this movie, but I did. It was interesting to see Walter Matthau in the criminal role, trying to outwit the police, the mob, and his idiot partner. It was an untypical role for Matthau, and he carried it off brilliantly.

Unfortunately, this DVD is a shame. Not only is it full-frame instead of 1.85 to 1, it has no extras whatsoever. I mean not even a menu!! You pop it in, it plays, then when it finishes it just starts over again. There are chapter stops, but not even a chapter menu. What's up with that?

Movie Review: Great film, but why on earth in 1.33?
Summary: 3 Stars

I echo another's complaint. OK, it's cheap ($6.10 from DDDVD) but I would gladly pay more for a widescreen version as made. Almost the first thing you see before it starts is "Filmed in Panavision". But that's not what you get on this DVD. Pity. Any hope for a second shot by Universal?

Movie Review: Disappointed--like everyone else
Summary: 3 Stars

I thought I had learned to be more careful in ordering--i.e. to make sure the DVD was in widescreen. Fooled again--does anyone still watch "full screen" format? Anyway the 3 stars is because of the movie, the best I can give under the circumstances.
