Movie Reviews of Chaos in Motion [2 DVD]

Movie Review: You get a little bad with the good in this 2 disc set
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought Dream Theater's Chaos in Motion off another website and for some reason they shipped it early and I got it today. Here is what I think about it.

I have every Dream Theater DVD to date, but this one lacks the quality of Live at Budokan or Score. I didn't know that this was going to be raw footage until I read the back of the case. The video quality looks decent, but if your expecting the look or nice camera angles of the past concert DVDs, you might be disappointed.

There are plenty of extra features on disk two that run well over two hours. There is a 90 minute documentary about the band's 35 country tour, some music videos and Mike Portnoy takes us on and behind stage in two short, but enjoyable segments. I really loved the documentary. You get to know the band, the crew and what life on the road is like.

The main thing Dream Theater does well with these DVDs (and they put one out about every two years) is the fact that they all feature different songs. The songs on here won't be found on the previous releases, which is nice for the fans.

The concert footage is good, could be better, but with a whole disc of extras, this is a must for anyone who likes Dream Theater.

Movie Review: Hardcore Fans Most Likely Disappointed
Summary: 4 Stars

It's hard to come out with consistently good albums. Few bands can come out with more than 2 or 3 without releasing a few band ones along the way. This is especially true with live albums, and the amount of live material Dream Theater has released both officially and unofficially doesn't help this CD at all.

Most people reading this review already know what to expect: the instruments are pretty much dead on, the vocals are way above average and hit stellar, but not without a few nails on the chalkboard moments (hey, no overdubs, so what do you expect?).

I think casual fans will love this DVD, especially those who are just getting into Dream Theater. While it's not as flashy as other DVDs around, it definitely covers a wider range of material than most of score and showcases the various talents of the band's members.

But hardcore fans aren't going to like it so much. While the setlist is different and there are certainly gems included, we've seen the official DVDs of the last two albums, which are some of the best any band has ever put out. We've seen the official bootlegs, too. So it's pretty safe to say that this, on the whole, is nothing new for us. Being able to listen to songs like "scarred" and "surrounded 07" as well as satisfying the normal curiosity of hearing songs live for the first time is about all this album will do for the diehards.

Dream Theater set the bar too high too often, so it shouldn't be a surprise when sometimes DVD budgets or concert budgets aren't as high as last time around. I give this 4 stars because, though it deserves less by DT standards, giving it anything lower is a sin when you match it up to the bland, overdubbed albums other bands put out maybe once or twice in their careers.

Give it some time, and be thankful that Dream Theater use their budget for this kind of thing. Soon, if you're like me, you'll be glad to add this to the cycle of Dream Theater DVDs available for watching or showing friends. Like with most things Dream Theater do now, reactions may be harsh at first but this too will eventually be considered a classic.

Movie Review: I Really Enjoyed This One!
Summary: 4 Stars

I have all the DT produced concert DVDs and though I wasn't expecting a whole lot out of this one that I hadn't seen before I ended up really enjoying this DVD. First off, it is shot in a more raw format with what seems like hand held digital video recorders. Because the footage jumps around to different venues for groups of songs some of the footage is more polished than others. Some reviewers seem to be really disappointed that the production value is not polished like Live in Budokan or Score but I found the rawness to have an edge that I enjoyed. It felt like it brought me a little closer to the real thing. Also, there are DT tidbits in between a lot of the concert where they or the crew talk about life on the road. Some of these sections are cool, others are a bit frivolous. Once again DT has chosen to include mostly songs that do not appear on any of the other concert DVDs which is well appreciated.

Disc 2 includes a 90 minute documentary about their life on the road from their daily routines to the crew to pre-show and show inner workings. It is somewhat interesting and tends to spend more time on the tech side of putting together their show rather than their personal lives on the road. Again, it is at least something different than their other DVDs. What I do like about DT is that they are not afraid to let you into their world so that you really get to know the musicians behind the songs.

My only negative comment is that grown men in their 40s should cuss a bit less (someone else commented on this). Especially during the live show. Why James feels the need to act this way I am not sure but it gets annoying and seems not to fit with their professionalism in music.

Overall I give it 4 stars for being a fresh twist on their usual concert DVDs. I enjoyed it for the rawness, the documentary, and of course for the killer music.

Movie Review: Chaos excelsior
Summary: 4 Stars

I like this DVD a lot , it's not as good as the Score disc which is just a masterpiece of sound and performance, but it is good and is one of the most unique concert DVDs you'll ever find, the second disc with the film of the tour covers everything about a rock tour anyone would want to know
the first disc shows clips of various shows, some are shot poorly(Rotterdam) but the music is still fantastic and these guys have the chops to dies for, unbelievable what they do, and with such precision!
They could have made a one venue disc but this is ambiitious and cool, kudos to Portnoy to have the balls to do this,, definitely recommend, by the by the film to Presence of Enemies is killer stuff by itself

Movie Review: Really not THAT bad
Summary: 4 Stars

I have seen pieces of the last two DVD's although I do not own them yet. I believe Budokan and Score are probably superior in terms of overall presentation and content. However, I think the extras disc on this one is fantastic. I love when a band takes me through an entire day up to showtime, (reminding us all that they have a pretty amazing job but it's still a JOB, with its own level of discipline and responsibility) and the Make-a-Wish segment was killer. Portnoy clearly was having a blast jamming with this kid and you can see the joy on this kid's face, actually playing Mike's kit alongside his idol.
This wets my appetite for more, so I'm gonna do the right thing and grab Budokan now. Cheers!
