Movie Reviews of Chaos in Motion [2 DVD]Movie Review: Chaos in Motion is the Perfect Title Summary: 5 Stars
After seeing somewhat of a mix of reviews for this new title so far, I wasn't real sure what to expect when I put Disc 1 in the DVD player. In the end, this is one Dream Theater fan that is well pleased with the release. An important note out of the gate though, as a couple of reviewers have pointed out, this is -not- another Score or Budokan. The production of this is run and gun, raw video footage both onstage and backstage.
But... that is the best part. This is closer to "5 Years in a Livetime" or one of the official bootlegs, in that it is a collection of footage that captures the essence of the band. Yes, you see that even prog-rock demigods are human. Small mistakes, personalities worn from the road, vocals off from a bad monitor mix or fatigue. If you want polished and perfect then buy Score. But to this former sound engineer, perfect isn't reality and sometimes I like the "uncut" version as is presented here.
The great part about this too is that it shows how hard working and talented these guys are. It is one thing to see the killer performances of a big show like the Score DVD captures. It is another too see the unrelenting energy these guys bring to show after show on the road across North American and Europe. I've not yet been able to make it to a live DT show, but given what I see on DVD you can count me in on the next tour.
As another review also points out, these guys are -great- at releasing live material with little overlap to prior DVD/CD releases. Each subsequent Rush show on DVD is getting more and more redundant, but each DT video is another piece of the big puzzle of their live career.
Now... throw in the second DVD with documentary and supporting material, and it makes this whole package a no-brainer for any real DT fan. For those of you that are fair-weather friends, well, buy it anyway. It will bring you closer to complete understanding and acceptance <grin>.
As for the one reviewer that says maybe this isn't so great for hard-core DT fans, well, he's not speaking for this one. Again, another thread in the incredible tapestry of Dream Theater!
Movie Review: Well done presentation! Summary: 5 Stars
I put off getting this double dvd when the reviews first came out. I shouldn't have relied so much on the negative ones, as this turned out to be pretty decent. The only negative to this, in my opinion, would be the audio. I watch all my concerts on a portable dvd player with a good set of headphones. Therefore I can just crank higher if I need to. When I put it on the computer, the sound was really low. I put it on through the television and the same problem. This would be the only negative thing with this dvd I can find. The video is well shot. The footage is taken from a few different venues. This makes the concert footage really feel like a "documentary" of the tour. With all the interviews and (much appreciated) information as to what goes into a DT performance, this turned out to be an incredible documentary of the even more incredible SYSTEMATIC CHAOS TOUR.
The members,as always, are in top form. There seemed to be special attention provided to the playing of John Petrucci. WHO COULD ASK FOR MORE? The man is the most underated guitar player in all circles. (Every member of the band is underated as well.) This video documents through the Documentary on disc2 and the live footage on disc1, just what all the hype is about this band that has been pleasing many a fan for over 20 years.
All in all, if you are a fan, or just a casual observer of the band, you will not be dissapointed with this documentary of an unbelievable tour!
Movie Review: Chaos Rocks Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great doccumentary of the tour. Seeing different segments in different venues is a cool idea. I was especially pleased to see two tracks from the Toronto show, which was the one I attended, and the footage from the Orpheum Theater in Vancouver is awesome. The concert itself had a harder and darker quality than some previous tours, and I think that Mike Portnoy captured much of that well with the raw footage. If I had to make one minor complaint: It would have been even more satisfying if one complete show from one of the 5-6 venues selected were included in the extras. As stated above: this is essential for any fan.
It is every bit as enjoyable as the other more refined production dvds.
Movie Review: Great raw DVD Summary: 5 Stars
I've been waiting for so long for Dream Theater to release another raw "day in the life" DVD like 5 Years In A Lifetime. I love the feel of the whole DVD, with songs varying from city to city, and the filming/sound really makes you feel like your part of the show. The footage in between songs (and hidden in menus) is halarious.
The documentary on the second disc is very entertaining and shows how nice the guys are. I'm very happy they included both the music videos, and in-studio footage. The projection films are a nice extra treat. The second disc ends with a photo gallery of the final bow from every show of the entire tour from behind the drumkit. Try to find yourself in the crowd!
Movie Review: This DVD is fantastic Summary: 5 Stars
Most of the reviews of this DVD seem to trash it relentlessly. I have no idea why. Just because it's not of HD quality? Come ON! It's not like some single angle bootleg with distorted sound and cruddy visual. It's edited beautifully, many of the shots are crisp and clear as day, and the audio is excellent. What more can you ask for? All the in-between "doc" footage is funny and enjoyable too.
Love the Blind Faith performance. Immaculate. Almost inhuman.
GREAT DVD.
