Movie Reviews of Changing Lanes

Movie Review: An Excellent Drama
Summary: 5 Stars

Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson are engaged in a powerful drama in this movie. The movie takes places in New York, where a car accident at the beginning of the movie brings together Affleck, an attorney at a prestigious law firm named Gavin Banek, and Jackson, as recovering alcoholic Doyle Gipson who is trying to prevent his ex-wife from moving to Oregon with his two children. Gipson's car is broken down with a flat tire and he's due in child custody court. Banek is too busy to help, and he races off to his own appointment at court, where he is to present documents to the judge which prove that a old, dying man had left millions to the law firm instead of rewarding his surviving relatives. The crucial legal documents he needed for court were left behind at the scene of the car accident. Gipson, because of his tardiness loses any claim to visitation or custody of his children which means his ex-wife will move the children with her to Oregon. Gipson has Banek's files, however, which keeps these two tied together, and a game of revenge between the two begins. "I just want my time back," Gipson explains to Banek, trying to get the man to empathize with his problems. Banek's career is on the line, and without those papers the law firm could be duly implicated in criminal fraud.

This is a fantastic drama with many complexities and great characters. Affleck and Jackson deliver incredible performances and I was pleasantly surprised with the depth and originality of this movie.

Movie Review: A smart drama with two great performances...
Summary: 5 Stars

Ben Affleck has really grown as an actor in the past year. This is his best performance since "Chasing Amy," and that's a hard one to beat. He plays Gavin, a lawyer who gets in an auto accident with Doyle, played by Samuel L. Jackson. Doyle gets his hands on some documents that Gavin needs for a case that very day and thus the two get into a cat-and-mouse escapade that feels surprisingly real as things unfold. The one thing this movie contains is an element of harsh realism and believability. Our characters are well scripted and the audience really understands them. We're never once asked to like our characters nor hate them. Instead, we are asked to empathize with them, especially Doyle, who is having family trouble and because of the accident is late to his divorce hearing. The one character we should like is Doyle, but even he has his faults. William Hurt plays an AA mentor who bails Doyle out of jail at one point and the two have a well-scripted conversation in which Hurt points out the faults of Jackson's character. "Changing Lanes" is definitely not a cheery film, but it is great in that the characters are three-dimensional and the acting is extremely good, especially from Affleck and Jackson. While this may not be one of Samuel L. Jackson's best films, at least it showcases Affleck as a talented, capable actor. I reccommend it to anyone looking for a movie that will make them think and requires more intelligence than the average popcorn flick.

Movie Review: Good God.......Didn't Expect it to be THIS good!! Awesome!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I definetly got my moneys' worth on this movie. I was afraid that there was too much information given on the trailers. Not so with this movie. Just about every 15 minutes or so, there would be a twist in the plot giving you something new to wonder and think about. Actually, when this movie was about one hour through, I was thinking that the movie was over. I was about to get upset, because even though the plot was very intertaining, the movie was too short. But in actuallity, I was taken by suprise. The movie is actually close to two hours long, and because of that, there is so much more to this movie than expected.

I am still blown away. I think that the problem with this movie is its being under-rated. I went to see "Changing Lanes", on its day or release into theatres. There was not anywhere near a full theatre. I was a bit annoyed but glad at the same time. This movie did come out first on the box office this last weekend, but still....it only brought in 17 million dollars. My suggestion is that if you are wondering about seeing it, whether that be because you don't know if its good, or if your moneys going to be well spent.

Trust me, It will be. To even give the movie a bit more credit, It even has a check or moral in it. The movie actually has a point to it. See if you can catch it!..... Enjoy!!!

Movie Review: How Low Can You Go?
Summary: 5 Stars

The human hunger for evil and revenge is something we have all seen before, especially in films like The Crow, A Time to Kill, and American Psycho. However, few films capture the essence of true emotion, and throw out the question: "What would you do?" Changing Lanes did this for me, and made me ask myself, "Would I do that?"

Ben Affleck stars as Gavin Banek, a corporate lawyer out for blood on every case he is involved in. When a small accident pits his wits against recovering alcoholic Doyle Gipson (Samuel L. Jackson), the beast within him leaves the poor old man stranded out in the rain with a flat tire and a head full of anger. However, as fate would have it, Banek drops an important file that is vital for winning his case in the midst of stranding Gipson.

What follows is the lust for who will come out the better man, both fighting to take back what they need. However, this is not simply a morality tale, it is a tale tainted with reality. I would not be surprised if this story has actually happened quite a few times, in many variations and forms. This is the greatest film of 2002, and I think Academy Award nominations are in line. If you want a movie that will entertain you and make you think like you have never thought before, check this out. It is just amazing.

I promise you won't be disappointed.

Movie Review: Go down this Lane
Summary: 5 Stars

Ben Affleck may not be the best actor in Hollywood history, but he definitely proves in Changing Lanes that he can hold his own next to a great actor such as Samuel L. Jackson. Affleck has made some stinkers, like Reindeer Games, but all is forgiven now.

Changing Lanes had everything and more than expected. There was such an evident layer of meaning behind all the twists and turns that the characters went through that it just intrigued me beyond any point that I thought I would be.

The directing was fantastic. It just sucked you right into the movie and made you feel like you were actually apart of it. I for one could not get myself to look away from the screen. The background music is what had me. I have never seen a movie utilize the music better.

Affleck and Jackson both give tremendous performances. Affleck especially, which I eluded to earlier. He made you care for his character, which really you wanted to hate him. I think he actually did have morals, and if he just slowed down a little bit in life, he would be able to use them. Samuel's character had his problems too, and maybe they all didn't get resolved, but I think you can come away knowing that both characters learned from this lesson.

Changing Lanes is a great movie that definitely makes my all time top 25 list. 5 Stars
