Movie Reviews of Central Station

Movie Review: One of the Best Movies I've seen!
Summary: 5 Stars

This story and Brazilian star was nominated for the 1999 Oscar, foreign film and actress. Central Station relates a most sensitive story of a jaded woman whose shell is pierced by a wide eyed young lad who is becomes a street urchin upon the death of his mother. The Brazilian urban and rural life is contrasted with "road" scenes as the old woman and lad travel in search of his father. Hispanic literature is rich with the picaresque novels. This might be the 20th/21st Century update of the genre. It is disappointing that the DVD does not have a Spanish audio track, only Brazilian Portuguese with English subtitles, an opportunity lost by the DVD producer and a sale lost in my case.

Movie Review: Remember Cinema Paradiso? Well, this one's even better!
Summary: 5 Stars

Very few times does a movie get as deep as "Central Station" is able to get. From the very beginning you feel that it is going to grab you, and it's not hard to let the tears roll by at so many point throughout the movie.

Fernanda Montenegro's performance is awesome, but we're accostumed to her doing this. However, the kid is as natural as one can get. It's hard not to feel for him what the woman in the movie felt...

Also, it should be noted that the photography was simply extraordinary! Beautiful shots that are complemented with some great acting and equally beautiful music, under a great direction.

In short, a classic before our eyes. You won't regret buying it!

Movie Review: One of the best foreign films of all time!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is like the only third foreign movie I've seen and from then on, I became a foreign film addict. Movies this good should be released not only in its home country but everywhere in the world. I've been reading the reviews of a lot of people for this movie and I find mixed reactions but generally, everyone loved the great performances, wonderful story, perfect setting and the mood it created to achieve that melodramatic audience appeal.

It is a very simple yet very touching movie. It will definitely touch that soft spot in your heart. I am proud to have a Central Station DVD on my collection. This is definitely one of the best and very much recommended film.

Movie Review: One of the best of the 90s!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a movie about looking for oneself's identity, this is a movie about humanity, if you don't feel touched then go see a psychatrist! Fernanda Montenegro definetely should have won the Oscar for the best actress award instead of giving it to the lousy Gwyneth Paltrow! Also, this film is far execellent than the pretentious 'Shakespear in love' and 'Life is beautiful', the juries of Oscar most of the times are either self-protected or BLIND! 'Central Station'is definetely one of the best in the 90s and should have won the best picture and the best foreign film award of that year itself! A MUST SEE AND OWN MOVIE!!!

Movie Review: Real people
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie "reads" like a novel. It is a journey that takes the viewer from the train station of Brazil, to the slums, and all the way to "Anonymous Paradise"--where houses are no different from each other.

I watched this film at a film festival here in Manila. This is an amazing piece of work. The main protagonists (Dora and Josue) are both flawed and real.

Some would probably complain that the subtitles tend to become obtrusive. However, I wouldn't want this dubbed because it might take away the value of Montenegra's performance.

Rent this, buy this--hell, steal this!!!
