Movie Reviews of Central Station

Movie Review: Has all the virtues of a masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

Central Station is the first movie to have make me cry in years . It tells the story of Dora , a bitter woman who gets paid for writting letters for people at the train station but afterwords doesn't care enough to send them to their receivers . Right after leaving the station , a woman to whom she just offered her services gets killed in an accident leaving her little son Josue all alone with nowone to support him . Dora , under the certain circumanstances , choses to take the kid under her wing and takes a long trip with him in order to find his father . During their harsh journey we have the chance to see the many faces of Brazil : the religious one (in a small village people are praying for their sins ) , the humane one ( Dora's slow change from cold and self-centered to sensitive and caring ) , the inhumane and dark one ( initialy some people try to use Josue as a source of human organs for sale ) . Fernanda Montenegro gives the best female perfomance of that year while being perfectly paired with child-actor Vinicious de Oliveira . The final part of the film is full of genuin human emotion . It's one of these endings you never want to end .

Movie Review: Brazilian's Greatest Female Actress at her Peak
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a film of contrasts. From Rio de Janeiro's Metropolis-like urban hell to Brasil's Nordeste - a barren place of barren and huge landscapes and unmittigated Faith.
Dora's character, played by sublime actress Fernanda Montenegro (Oscar nominated and certainly worthy of winning...) evolves from an urban Rio de Janeiro's letter writer-devil'll do all to a mother figure to street kid Josué after his own mother dies.
After that this is a spiritual road movie - for Josué's long lost father - and for Dora's long lost faith in herself and in other human beings - which she eventually achieves most purely in Josués character.
This is a powerful movie. Christianly so. Any religion-so. But mostly a movie about trust in the residual bits of humanity that allow those in near-despair to believe. Maybe not in God as such - but in christian individuals as such...
So is this a religious movie? Not exactly. And not at all a Catholic one.
But it is a delightful innocent mix-up of beliefs, with a kind of untainted christianism standing out.

Movie Review: A Great Achievement
Summary: 5 Stars

So many times a road movie remains on the road, with the young boy remaining in a state of wandering, though of increasing self-discovery. This remarkable film is a true celebration of rediscovery -- a rediscovery of family and a rediscovery of love. The mostly happy ending is not even slightly forced, but instead comes across as the real and most satisfying conclusion of a long journey. The young boy, far from being spoiled or a brat, seems more intent on defending himself and realizes he must keep pushing and pushing his older companion if he is ever to see his father. His tears show that he is only a little boy on the inside. Her tears show that she has a warm, tender heart yearning to break free.

Who says a film needs to have a rotten, almost nihilistic ending in order to be "deep" or "meaningful?" Family, love, and even sweet sentiment can also be the stuff of depth. After years of the other stuff, what a refreshing change of pace!

Thanks to Central Station and Mr. Salles for getting it right!

Movie Review: Poignant
Summary: 5 Stars

I truly loved this movie. I am an American who was saved in a little, dusty Brazilian church years ago, and my soul has never forgotten it's first home or language.
Central Station shines in its ability to capture the ache and isolation that all people feel. The two characters grate against each other, but as time passes and troubles mount, the hardened and scarred areas of their hearts are what wear away, and they are able to love each other without pretense. The ending left me weeping unabashedly. Tears streamed down my face and my heart felt shattered. Sometimes, loving someone means putting the other person ahead of you to the extent that you suffer greatly.
And yet, the pain I felt was good. I rejoiced as they each remembered the day at Bom de Jesus. Life on earth can hurt, but in addition to fellowship with the Lord Himself, the love of friends can carry us through the loneliest, saddest moments. Watch Central Station and feel renewed in your desire to love your friends honestly.

Movie Review: Central Emotions.
Summary: 5 Stars

I just watched this movie for the fourth time. I had to show it to friends when it was released back in 1999. And after almost six years I still get the same emotions every time I watch it. This is the kind of movie that reminds people that simple things in life are the ones that should be cherished the most. A friendship that was born out of necessity and doubt, and a partnership that leads the two main characters into a world where the true meaning of "well doing" is exposed. Central Station captures two opposites' souls in a sort of a dance of character and personality, bringing different worlds together: The old and the young, a woman and a boy, a literate and an illiterate, experience and novelty. Central Station is sure to capture your attention for two hours and leave a feeling of satisfaction in you after seeing it. Superb acting and a great storyline are the main elements that make this journey, one that will stick to you for years to come.
