Movie Reviews of Center StageMovie Review: Beyond Amazing Summary: 5 Stars
I was introduced to the music of Tommy Emmanuel while lying in a hospital bed and feeling depressed as I flipped through various channels on the television. The flipping came to a halt when I heard for the first time the music of Tommy Emmanuel. He was playing, as I later found out, Mombasa. I had caught the televised taped concert performance of "Center Stage" in progress. The gusto Emmanuel puts into his performance was invigorating. I was hooked; I had to have this music for my own.
I want to share the fantastic music Tommy creates so I have shown this DVD to everyone who comes to visit me. Tommy Emmanuel captures what it really means to play the acoustic guitar with expression to the fullest. It is astonishing that he is able to play such a different amount of musical sounds with a guitar. Usually on a concert DVD or CD there are one or two pieces I do not care for, the exception is "Center Stage," every piece was incredible.
The quality of the sound and the picture are excellent on the DVD. This is one DVD that I find myself returning to watch and never tire of it. I bought both the DVD and CD. While it is much more entertaining to watch and listen to the DVD, the CD allows me to take this extraordinary music to listen to while in my car. I highly recommend this DVD to everyone. I would like to give ten stars to this review, but alas the highest the review will accept is five.
Movie Review: A new fan says- this will rock your socks off! Summary: 5 Stars
I just discovered Tommy Emmanuel (Tony Enamel as he says people mistakenly call him) on YouTube. I had no idea this guy had been around so long. Man was I missing out!
I've played guitar for a long time and have a strong appreciation for real musical talent and ability developed and executed on it. This fella delivers nothing but that! He and his music are both amazing. And what makes it all the more enjoyable to watch is how much fun he has doing it. He really loves playing, is full of energy and seems like a wonderful guy. Still, if you have no concern for that part of the picture, Tommy's music and playing skills are a wonder to hear and see. He makes it look so easy you sometimes think you should be able to do what he's doing. So you pick up your guitar and... land right back in the real world again.
Anyway, the DVD picture and sound quality is great! 5.1 surround sound with a crisp, clear digital image. I hope they make more of these with Tommy before he retires (which hopefully won't be for many years!!).
God bless you Tommy. You've blessed us with the miracle of your music and personality. I wish you the absolute best.
Movie Review: A Collectible Summary: 5 Stars
I'll add on to the excellent reviews posted on this DVD.
Possibly like those who appreciate TE's skills, I play finger-pick guitar and have watched TE's concerts live.
There's one distinct benefit of this DVD vs watching live: it provides close-ups from different angles of TE performing, heightening the audio-visual experience not possible even from a front-row seat (which I was lucky to get on my first TE concert).
That said, I'm going with the opinion that leaving in TE's between-song interaction with the audience would be good. It'll provide an opportunity for folks to have the full "TE experience" which, to me, is genuine human goodness expressed through guitar.
Get the DVD, nevertheless.
Movie Review: It is no accident... Summary: 5 Stars
...that Tommy walks this planet and does what he does. At the time of the Center Stage show, I was sitting in my Vacaville apt. channel surfing and just by accident (?) happened upon this sweet man and his sweet music. I had never heard nor seen the likes of TE before. As it was, I went to his website and discovered that he was due to play in Petaluma at the Mystic in a month.
Outside the theater, in the line waiting to get in, we all buzzed with our personal "how I discovered him" stories and impressions. I got there early and was able to snag a seat down front. Next to sitting in the back room at the Elbow Room in Harrisonburg Va. to listen to Happy The Man on a Sunday afternnon, this is my favorite show.
Movie Review: The best Summary: 5 Stars
Anyone who likes great guitar playing will love this video. I have another DVD by Tommy, but this is "the best," and exactly what I was looking for when I bought the album and the CD. I rate the DVD higher than the CD because it's really hard to appreciate how good Tommy is unless you see what he is doing. He is a very 'visual' performer who puts is all into every song. One of the highlights is when he segues into a sensual "Waltzing Matilda" from the finger virtuosity of "The Tall Fidler." The percussion rhythm work on "Mombassa," and, "Nine Pound Hammer" demonstrate that this musician is a lot more than just another guitar player. The song writing is stunning as well making this simply, "The Best."
