Movie Reviews of Celtic WomanMovie Review: A wonderful performance. Summary: 5 Stars
Celtic Woman is absolutely mesmerizing.
It's not a show for hardcore Celtic music fans, who might not appreciate the stylized sets and lush orchestration. Rather, it seems aimed at those whose introduction to Celtic music was in Riverdance.
Any fan of any type of music will be amazed at the voices of the featured vocalists. They effortlessly glide through vocal ranges that make you think, "This is what angels must sound like." The songs run the range from soothing to haunting, with some lively moments in between.
Despite the polish, Celtic rythms and melodies are at the core of the entire show. This may introduce many more people to Celtic music. Hopefully, it will make them want to hear more.
I bought both the CD and the DVD. While the music stands on its own, it is GREATLY enhanced by the visuals of the show. That, in no small part, is due to the fact that all of these women are absolutely beautiful.
Movie Review: A DVD to have for any music lover Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD is a blend of celtic and irish music that has not been seen as far as I know. Music is very important to me because I am a trained vocalist. This dvd shows almost no difference between the vocalist and the musicians which is rare and unique.
I personally enjoyed the style and freedom of espression given to the musicans. They have the privildge to gift to us the style of song that was before now handed down by generations, from grandmother to granddaughter or son. It is a wonderful gift of tradition, old world story telling, and newer music we are all familiar with. The arrangements are beautiful and insightful and full of the celtic color and flair. I would recommend it to any parent who has a child in a orchestra program or who has any interest in music. It gives a unique view of expression with the violin that is awesome. All the arrangements are well done and easy to listen to and enjoy. A must have for any celtic in spirit.
Movie Review: Beautifully Moving! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently saw Celtic Woman in Boston, after only seeing bits and pieces of this video on public television. I was blown away at the concert by the magnificence of their voices and special lighting effects. On the way out, I heard someone say that they stuck very close to the songs and style on the video, which led me to buy this. The video was filmed inside an auditorium, so it differed from the breezy outdoor arena where I saw them, but the clarity of the music and the softly sung passion in their voices came through quite nicely. They sing so effortlessly and the music just fills my soul and takes me back to that warm summer night in Boston where I first heard them. The fiddler who tosses her beautiful blonde hair, while leaping around on the stage without missing a beat is quite something to see as well. The rich harmonies and melodies will transport you to wherever you want to go in your mind - just sit back, dim the lights and enjoy!
Movie Review: Surprisingly good entertainment! Summary: 5 Stars
What a delight it has been to watch and listen to this live concert again and again. These five women and David Downes, who arranged and directed the program, bring an exciting new touch to many old favorites and introduces a few new ones. David has created wonderful new harmonies to accent the extensive voice talents of the individual performers. Recorded live in Dublin, the energy and emotion of the music continues to please anew with each additional viewing.
The production values of this recording are also excellent. The sound and lighting manage to accent the beauty of the setting, the performers, and the music. I couldn't help thinking that we will be seeing and hearing more from Mr. Downes and I hope that we will also have more to come from this ensamble of performers. The special features include interviews with the six principles and is a MUST SEE for anyone who views this DVD.
Movie Review: Beyond expectation Summary: 5 Stars
I won't buy the idea that the performances were lip-synced. And the violin bow of Mairead was tilted occasionally for a well-known bowing technique for thinner sound, not so that it wouldn't touch the string.
It's refreshing to see that "uniqueness" doesn't always mean something radically and purposefully different (the concept mostly assumed in the modern art work). As long as the performers individually communicates through their performance, their work will automatically be unique, without the need to convey radically "new idea".
Not that easy to make these simple, known, and similar style pieces keep catching audience's attention continuously. Orchestration of both voices and instruments is great. And I personnally like the percussion performances. Overall, someone may be able to do differently, but will never be better.
