Movie Reviews of Celtic WomanMovie Review: I laughed, I cried... Summary: 5 Stars
There is something emotive about Celtic music - a sort of underlying sadness that makes it tear at our hearts, yet it contains a strong sense of hope and destiny that causes us to feel stronger for hearing it. This DVD really captures the wonderful voices, faces, musicianship, and orchestration of the performance - what an awesome event to watch and share with someone else who feels the same. We first saw Celtic Women on PBS and we immediately fell in love - that was over a year ago - recently, my father-in-law called to let us know Celtic Women was on TV and we should turn it on right away because it was so good - after letting him know we had seen the performance and liked it he mentioned their desire to find it in DVD. I immediately searched and found it on Amazon - purchased 5 copies, one for everyone in the family, and my wife delivered their copy the next day. We have since received more than one call letting us know how much they are enjoying their DVD, but their only disappointment is that the setting is not the castle they originally saw in the PBS performance. Maybe there will be another DVD made which includes the castle - we can only wait and hope. Overall - great DVD to own and watch over and over again!
Movie Review: Celtic Woman Summary: 5 Stars
I can say without a doubt that this DVD was the most entertaining musical production I have ever heard or seen. Celtic Woman is made up of 4 singers and one fiddle player. Each of these women have exceptionally beautiful voices. Lisa Kelly performs a solo of "May It Be" from "The Lord of the Rings". Meav Ni Mhaolchatha does a wonderful job with "Danny Boy". Chloe Agnew sings "Walking of Air" to open the program, then does a beautiful job with "Someday". Chloe was only 15 when this was recorded in Dublin in 2004. I was astonished that someone so young could have such a powerful and beautiful voice. The women sing together on "Ornico Flow", "One World", "Somewhere", "You Raise Me Up", and "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring". Orla Fallon does a nice job on the harp and sings with the other women. Mairead Nesbitt plays the fiddle and does a couple of instrumental numbers, "The Butterfly" and "Ashokan Farewell". Even though all of the women are solo artists, their singing together is truly amazing. This is a DVD that I will enjoy hearing over and over again. This DVD is very highly recommended. I would give it more than 5 stars if that were allowed. It's that good and well worth the amazon.com price!
Movie Review: Fabulous vocals with amazing blending!! Summary: 5 Stars
Prior to watching this DVD I read several personal reviews here on Amazon which criticized the performers, cuts, and audio quality. All I can say after watching this is that those who criticized the sound quality must own substandard DVD players or audio equipment because the sound quality and balance between the lead vocals, background vocals, and instrumentals was perfect in my studio.
I do agree that some of the the vocalists could have been more animated; however, their physical beauty and vocal talents more than made up for any shortcomings. This DVD -- and the corresponding CD recording -- will hold a high position in my Celtic music collection. Several of the music tracks have an airy quality -- in the style of Enya and other traditional Celtic vocalists -- so this may not be everyone's cup of tea. But for those who appreciate beautiful soprano voices with amazing instrumental arrangements, this is the DVD to buy!!
BTW: The voice of Chloe combined with the musical talent of David Agnew on the Oboe made for an absolutely stunning rendition of Nella Fantasia.
BUY THIS DVD.
Movie Review: Pure Heaven.... Summary: 5 Stars
That's what I think of the "Celtic Women" experience....didn't think much of them in the first place when my girlfriend first introduced me to their audio CD. Thought it was another bunch of lil' known new age artistes doing covers of well-known classics & traditional songs with Irish / Celtic influences ie - Enya, Clannad etc
But after reading the Amazon reviews, something made me purchase their DVD. Boy, did i enjoy myself. Seeing the artistes perform my favorite Celtic numbers live was totally different from passively listening to the CD. From the seraphic voices of Chloe Agnew and Meav right down to the mesmerising sounds of Orla Fallon's harp and the beautiful tunes from Mairead Nesbitt's violin, this whole DVD has a totally ethereal feel to it. All fans and purists should not miss out on this one. Definitely recommended for all, especially newcomers to the genre. Gotta thank my girlfriend for introducing me to them. Thanks luv, Celtic Women rocks!
As at time of writing, I have already purchased the follow-up DVD; Celtic Women - Live At Slane Castle, Ireland just to relive the experience.
Movie Review: Incredible voices and music Summary: 5 Stars
I first heard of the Celtic Woman from a PBS broadcast the Celtic Woman - A New Journey. I became captivated by their voices and smooth style of singing. All five woman are incredible performers. The four vocalists, Chloe, Lisa, Meav and Orla are beautiful to listen to as they are to watch. Even when they sing in Gaelic the pure quality of their voices are breathtaking. Mairead, the fiddler, never speaks, but you will delight your senses as she glides around the stage playing her fiddle. This DVD concert is beautifully produced with a good selection of songs that highlight their powerful voices and personal styles. All the music has a Celtic quality even when the song is not of Celtic origin. It's a very upbeat and happy DVD which I hoped would never end. I originally purchased the Celtic Woman - A New Journey and was so mesmerized by their performances I just had to have more and this DVD was perfect. I found behind the scenes very interesting learning more about these woman and their background. You'll not be disappointed.
