Movie Reviews of Celtic Thunder: It's Entertainment!Movie Review: What a leap in showmanship and musical entertainment values ! Summary: 5 Stars
The difference between the musicality and theatrics in THIS INCREDIBLE performance and their previous DVDs is ENORMOUS. This show is a joy to watch, an upbeat experience rare in today's musical business, and indicates a huge amount of phenominal talent development and growth in production values. We have loved the "Fab Five" from their beginning, and repeatedly watch their prior DVD performances. This production greatly exceeded our expectations. The men and boys (!) have reached a new level of professionalism, performance maturity, and vocal development. The producers have been very wise in the selection of the Special Features materials, because through them we have been allowed to get to know this group as individuals, as human beings, and a bit about their growing up environs. This disc's Special Features REALLY extend that intimacy and familiarity to a new level, increasing our appreciation for each and the challenges they have faced . The musical selection is very surprising, and certainly more like a deftly crafted compilation of former and contemporary musical hits than an Irish vocal group would be expected to perform. I must note that the addition of all the male dancers, several female participants, and HUGE set seemed to come at the expense of the informality and closeness of just watching the group perform. I would suggest that the extras, theatrics, and huge set be toned down to not take away from the performers themselves. A truly stellar performance from Mr. Coulter and the guys which will encourage continued performances of this gifted group. Though the speech of several are very hard to understand in person, they have mastered the American pronunciation of the lyrics with great accuracy. Still enjoy hearing the dialect in George's songs, though. BRAVO ! Continued success for many years to come is my hope for this family oriented, clean, professional, very talented musical entertainment group.
Summary of Celtic Thunder: It's Entertainment!Overture and beginners please... Strike up the band... Stand by for Celtic Thunder... and It s Entertainment . This stylish and high energy trip through some of the great songs of the last 30 years is pure showbiz! It is a tribute from Celtic Thunder to the legacy they have inherited from the great entertainers of the past, and a mark of how far they themselves have travelled as performers, in a few short years. It evokes an era of big bands and boulevards, top hats and tails and singing and dancin in the rain! It makes for irresistible listening as the principals from this generation pay their respects to the stars of an earlier time. In the true tradition of variety the music covers a mix of styles, of songs and of singers, as the lads salute their musical heroes- from Fred Astaire to Neil Diamond, from Jim Croce to Chicago, from Michael Buble to The Beach Boys! Each member features with two songs, one a serious workout, the other a bit of pure fun and a chance to let the hair down! These lighter choices have George stomping around to The Proclaimer s My Life With You , while Ryan takes on the persona of a Chicago gangster with Bad, Bad Leroy Brown . Keith slips right into character with a Surfer Medley and Damian becomes a bit of a boulevardier with Standing On The Corner . Paul steps up to the plate as an accomplished song and dance man with the rooty-tooty Doo Wacka Doo , specially written by Phil Coulter. One big surprise package is guitarist Neil who not only joins Ryan and Keith in a haunting, close harmony version of Leonard Cohen s Hallelujah but also delivers a superb, soulful solo on the Disney classic When You Wish Upon A Star . The show is rounded off by a couple of ensemble numbers, featuring all six singers, the perennial Amazing Grace and U2 s anthemic Still Haven t Found What I m Looking For . All in all, this is an inspired celebration of wonderful songs and great singers, an uplifting feel-good package that is the perfect antidote to the recession blues!
