Movie Reviews of Catch and Release

Movie Review: Nicely Done !!!
Summary: 4 Stars

From what I can surmise this is writer/director Susannah Grant's first major film,
and she deserves "Kudo's", for delivering in both areas. First off, I have to admit
I'm a Jennifer Garner fan. I can't resist the
pretty "smile lines", and genuine enthisiasm. I also think she's a pretty
accomplished actress, as well. Though the storyline seems to be fairly
convoluted, and ever changing.....this romantic "dramady" is really fun to
watch unfold. I think that Grant coaxes the "best" out of her ensemble cast.
In addition to Garner, actor/director Kevin Smith, turns in a superb performance
as "Sam". Just remember...this guy was performing off of a script! He is SO natural and effortless
in his delivery, that you'd swear the entire thing was impromptu. Also, Juliette Lewis,
as the "ditzy"
near "hooker" type persona, with a heart of gold, is just great! She is
absolutely "spot on" as her character. In my opinion, the weakest link in
this fine ensemble cast is Timothy Olyphant....as the "good guy", who wins
all. He just seems to fall a bit flat in my eyes.
Some scenes are just plain hilarious....Juliette explaining her Chinese
Therapy and menu.....little boy "Matty", handling his first fresh caught
fish from the river....and Kevin Smith's many onscreen witty remarks.
( Read , actor Jack Black....but almost better). This is an absolutely
perfect movie for a rainy afternoon or evening, when you may want a little
"lift" to your spirit. As I said...."Nicely Done"

Movie Review: Surprise, grief can be funny & Kevin Smith can ACT!
Summary: 4 Stars

Okay, most of the time a film tries to be part comedy, part drama and part buddy picture, what it ends up being is a total wreck! Catch and Release beats the odds by being all the above while avoiding total wreck status. It's that rarest of things, a film that reveals you don't have to be married or be blood to grieve for somone you love and how many emotions grieving can reveal... including humor.

There is that chick-flick quality that will have guys begging off, but fortunately for me Kevin Smith acting in a film he didn't direct was enough to convince me to go. The man can actually act, and not just in his own films. Unlike other films where a nonactor tries to step up, Kevin Smith was not a blank space on the screen. He held his own and then some. There's even a certain degree of self parody of his profound-statement-delivering Silent Bob charater.

Moving on from Kevin, everyone else also did an excellent job. Jennifer Garner (Alias), Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood), Julliette Lewis, Sam Jaeger, Fiona Shaw and everyone else turned in strong performances as people trying to come to terms with the grief of losing a best friend, a fiancee, a provider and a son.

I found myself laughing at the horrible yet comic realism.

From what I understand this is Susannah Grants major motion picture directorial debut, but it didn't feel like it. Already an extremely well proven screen writer, this may be Susannah's first movie directing job, but with this many laughs and this much emotion, I know it won't be her last.

Movie Review: Peace Gardens, Chi Blockers And The Art Of Fresh Water Fishing
Summary: 4 Stars

Active young man dies in a tragic fishing accident just before he's about to be married leaving his bride-to-be Gray (Jennifer Garner) left to sort through her grief and his personal affairs with his three best friends; Fritz (Timothy Olyphant), Sam (Kevin Smith) and Dennis (Sam Jaeger). If that wasn't enough emotional angst to deal with, things become more complicated when Gray learns that her deceased fiance was sending monthly checks to a girlfriend and young son living out of state in California. With emotions running high the gathering of friends and lovers must find a way to deal with the death and their own personal destines.

'Catch and Release' is a rather clever title meant as a metaphor sending the message that whatever one believes they have in life, or caught must eventually be released. In this particular case that means relationships and loved ones. Jennifer is superb as the strong but grieving fiance, Timothy Olyphant works well as the new man in her life and Kevin Smith is superb as one of the deceased best friends. He provides the perfect comedic counterbalance to the movie.

The cast is strong and likeable, the dialogue witty and insightful and the storyline well conceived and delivered. Because of the presence of Kevin Smith the movie transcends the genre of "chick flick" and becomes something everyone can enjoy. Give it a try!

Movie Review: Romantic Comedy Right up there with Four Weddings and a Funeral
Summary: 4 Stars

The script is bare bones & bland, has been used 20 times before. That doesn't matter. Because the actors are pro's and they flesh out what the screenplay lacks with their creativity and make it special.
The Movie is about a guy who died and how his lovers, friends and family deal with his passing.Jennifer Garner really steals scenes in this movie as the bride that was robbed of her wedding. He best scene is when she sits in the tub wearing her wedding dress and catches one of his friends making love to a waitress at her husbands to be's funeral.
Director Kevin Smith & former child star Juliette Lewis both play a truly interesting characters, he works in advertising for Celestial Seasoning Tea Company and has the best zingers in the whole movie. He reminds me of the intellectual that works at the comic book store and imparts his sarcastic words of wisdom at everybody.
The characters reminded me a little of friends, only much more real and charming. Like this one guy,Jen's character hates at the beginning of the movie. She makes you hate him too. But as she grows and changes, and he grows up a bit you start to like him better. That my friends is good acting and fabulous character developement.

Movie Review: Critics have been overly harsh!
Summary: 4 Stars

Okay, I actually agree with some of the criticism this movie has received. For one thing, I too wish we would've been introduced to Grady. Also, as great as Kevin Smith is, his "quirkiness" seemed a bit forced and unnatural at times. And Juliette Lewis? She's a pretty cool lady too, but I think there could've been better casting for this role.

Despite this, C&R is a really warm movie, and I think Jennifer Garner and Timothy Olyphant had GREAT onscreen chemistry; their relationship to me was believable. I think people who are giving this movie 1 or 2 stars are definitely being hypercritical- take it for what it's worth, which is strictly entertainment value.

Finally, I think the music featured in this film alone should earn the movie at least a 3 star rating! The score is beautiful, and the soundtrack is equally amazing; it all falls perfectly together with each scene, shot in nowhere other than Boulder, CO.
