Movie Reviews of Catch and ReleaseMovie Review: One of the Best Kissing Scenes in Film Ever! Summary: 5 Stars
I won't bore you with a summary of the plot, which has already been outlined. I would prefer to highlight how this movie and its aesthetics affected me.
This movie was tastefully directed and the script was witty and intelligent. The comedy was surprising, in that you didn't expect it. I mean, I knew it was a comedy, but I didn't expect the humor to have such intelligence - each laugh the movie evoked caught me off guard, because I wasn't expecting it. And that's the best kind of humor there is. I laughed and laughed, especially at Sam, who could make a serious situation funny with just the teensiest effort. And Garner's "She's f'in p.o.'d" line was just awesome! And on top of everything else, the cinematography and soundtrack beautifully captured the spirit of the film. This movie is a work of art that captures all your senses - very well put together with wonderful chemistry between the actors.
And I have a new favorite actor: Timothy Olyphant. I saw him in Hitman, but it took me a while to put it together that this was the same guy. He pulled off the easygoing, comedic peformance in this movie without a hitch, something I wouldn't have seen coming based on his Hitman performance, which was also way-cool! And that kiss! Whoa! Well, I guess I should say "kissES" coz ol' Timothy knows how to add the sizzle and spice more than once in this movie. I mean, I thought the kiss at the end of "The Lake House" was good, but the kissing scene in this movie put Keanu and Sandra to shame! Is it gettin' hot in here or is it just me?
At any rate, I loved the story, I loved the humor, I loved the romance, I loved everything about this movie. It wasn't a cliche, which was so refreshing. This has become a staple in my movie library.
Movie Review: GREAT Movie! Summary: 5 Stars
Being a fan of Kevin Smith, I wanted to check out all his acting rolls, even the films based outside his typical New Jersey realm. I was more than surprised with this film. I thought I was going to own it simply as a collectors piece, and it turned out to be one of my favorites. While it is one that could be, and usually is, labeled as a "Chick Flick," it has more to offer movie goers than a simple love story. There are a few side stories here, and they all held my interest. A story of loss between friends, a story of a strained relationship between best buds, a story of mistaken identity, and a story about the guy and the girl that were not at all what each initially thought. Timothy Olyphant puts on a great performance as "Fritz," and Jennifer Garner does one of her best parts as "Grey." Other stand-outs are "Dennis," played by Sam Jaeger, and of course Dennis' best friend "Sammy," who is the reason I wanted to see this film in the first place, acted out perfectly by Kevin Smith. Smith fans, be warned, this is not a typical Kevin Smith vulger-fest. But there is no mistaking who he is. The director allowed Kevin a lot of freedom here to be himself, and reinvent Sam. He also was able to pick out his wardrobe, which holds a lot of similarities to his typical clothing choices.
Overall, this film is terrific. Great landscapes, a ton of chemistry between players, and a wonderful overall cast.
If you're a fan of Romance, Comedy, Drama, and yes, even Kevin Smith, this is a must-see!
Movie Review: Riveting motion picture. Summary: 5 Stars
Catch & Release is one of my very favorite movies. It reveals many levels of grief in several different people- lovers, close friends, business partners, parents, mystery people that I won't reveal- and links very different people through the death of one man. I do not find this film to be depressing- it is entirely too lighthearted! I've had several people be put off this movie by 2 things: they know it involves grief, so they think it must be terribly depressing. It isn't. It's true and lifelike and these characters are fully occupied. They learn and grow in very amusing and remarkable ways. The second thing that can be off-putting is the presence of Kevin Smith. Do not underestimate him! His character is very amiable and real, nothing like I've ever seen him do before.
Also, the scenery is spectacular. Just the images of nature in Colorado are magnificent- rivers, woods, shorelines... it's breathtaking. And this movie is not all about fishing. It's an important theme, and it's here and there, but you won't be stuck in a fishing boat during the entire film. Not at all! I think Catch & Release is a great adventure and it is entirely unique. Please give it a chance! It's very cool.
Movie Review: Beginning again and looking back Summary: 5 Stars
Gray loses her fiance before their wedding in more ways than one....in the days following his death, she discovers that the man she loved is not the man she thought she knew.
Don't be fooled....this is not a "chick flick." There's a lot for both sexes to like in this story of a fiance AND his friends coping, picking up after, and moving on after the death of a loved one.
All the characters are likable and Kevin Smith and Sam Jaeger give great performances as the friends and long-suffering roommates. You wonder along with Gray as to why Grady (the deceased) even liked his friend Fritz (Tim Olyphant) but find out why along with her.
This is a great movie about relationships and the bonds between friends and lovers. Check it out, especially if you're looking for a great date flick.
Movie Review: Surprisingly Good. Summary: 5 Stars
I didn't have very high expectations for this movie, and saw it just because Kevin Smith was in it. But I was quite surprised at how drawn into the characters I became. Regardless of what other movies you can compare this one to, it does manage to keep you interested. The plot unfolds at a comfortable pace and allows you to grow attatched the the characters that other romantic-comedy-types don't neccessarily allow time for. It does however, start on a bummer but by the middle of the movie you find yourself rooting for Garner's character and trying to figure out how your own morals would direct you if you found yourself in her shoes... definetely a chick film. If guys are renting just to see Kevin Smith, in my opinion, his character isn't enough to carry the show, but he does give a great performance.
