Movie Reviews of Casino Royale [Blu-ray]Movie Review: By the current count, the 1,268th review for Casino Royale Summary: 5 Stars
By adding my own review of Casino Royale to all these others -- making mine the 1,268th -- I expect to accomplish nothing more than to conjoin my voice to the chorus of praise for the best James Bond movie in years. Until this came along, I had written the franchise off. But I enjoyed this so much, I didn't mind buying it twice, first on DVD, then later upgrading to Casino Royale [Blu-ray]. The hi-def picture was absolutely phenomenal, and whenever I want to impress upon someone the difference Blu-ray makes, I pull this one out as the demo. From the retro grainy black-&-white introduction, thru sunny tropical locations, to the darker European countryside and luxurious interiors, a full range of textures and tones is sampled, making this engrossing story beautiful to look at, something to savor over multiple viewings. Daniel Craig's powerful performance makes it all the sweeter.
Selecting the actor to play Fleming's iconic character is Hollywood's equivalent to the Vatican picking a new pope. In the limbo between films, the people gather and wait. When the studio finally announced amidst the usual éclat that Craig had been chosen to fill the tuxedo, the surprising selection was a signal that something major was going down. It was a ballsy break with tradition, and it paid off. Craig owned that part, and his Bond will be what future generations will compare his successors to. Of course it helped that he had a topnotch script, which hews closer to the novel than any Bond film since around From Russia with Love, after which they became increasingly distracted with silly gadgets (excepting On Her Majesty's Secret Service). The stuff about the footrace and the tanker at the airport were added, along with the stuff on the boat with Vesper in the epilogue. But the salient points of the rest of the story have some basis in the novel. It distinguishes itself further with its emotional detail, beginning with a pre-credit sequence marked with a psychological gamesmanship that was maintained on some level throughout the rest of the film. It's tightly crafted, wasting nothing, slamming into Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" through the barrel of the trademark gunshot and swirl, then moving through the locales, hewn seamlessly through great editing and strong musical cues of variations of the theme. The pacing gives the story enough time to breath, but never lingers. It flows. Even the card game itself to me was exciting, and I don't play cards.
I was prompted to write this review today because I ordered the Blu-ray edition of Quantum of Solace, and anticipating its arrival has got me appreciating all over again just how good Casino Royale was. At first disappointed that Quantum of Solace didn't have the same subtleties as Casino Royale, I've since come to see it as part two of this one great story. It should be here Saturday. In the meantime, I'll refresh the continuity by watching this one again.
