Movie Review: A romantic obsession...

"Cashback", directed by Sean Ellis, is a film about a romantic insomniac. After breaking up with his girlfriend Ben (Sean Biggerstaff) finds that he can't fall asleep so he finds that he has eight hours of extra time per day on his hands. He decides to use this time in order to make some money working at a supermarket. He realizes that he also has a miraculous talent. He can stop time. As an aspiring artist he uses this ability to freeze those around him and sketch them. He's romantically obsessed with the beauty he sees in the female form and spends a great deal of his spare time sketching the women he sees.
This interesting film is at times extremely light hearted and manic, while at other times it flows like in a dream, unfolding time gradually before our eyes. The other male characters in the movie are largely comic relief to Ben's level headed, and thoughtful personality. The woman are icons of his adoration, and like beautiful statues, that pose for him, as he views and sketches them. This is a movie about reverie, and reflection about the beautiful moments in our lives. It is also spiced up with some genteelly eroticism, and many comic moments.

CASHBACK (DVD MOVIE)A slight but likable British comedy-fantasy with a touch of naughtiness, Cashback is an expanded version of director Sean Ellis' Oscar-nominated short film of the same name about a bored supermarket clerk who discovers that he has the ability to stop time. Sean Biggerstaff (from the Harry Potter franchise) is Ben, a lovelorn young man whose chronic insomnia (due to a bad breakup) forces him to bury himself in pointless and repetitive work at a local grocery store. Once there, boredom causes him to believe that he can stop time, and he enjoys long and languid fantasies about undressing and sketching the female shoppers. But reality intrudes in the form of recollections of his troubled past, as well as the lovely presence of fellow clerk Sharon (Emilia Fox), who offers the promise of love in the real world. A gentle and artfully directed independent film, Cashback doesn't run very deep in terms of emotion, but the special effects are clever, the cast quirky and amusing, and its premise is an appealing mix of softcore reverie and boyish longing. - Paul Gaita
