Movie Reviews of Carrie (Special Edition)

Movie Review: just wild
Summary: 5 Stars

I've always loved Stephen King films for his highly unusual writing talent and for the way he always delivers unexpected and bizarre twists, but I *completely* forgot how much I love Carrie!

I haven't seen this movie in quite a long time. In fact, it must have been 20 years since I last watched it. I completely forgot what it was about.

Carrie is the name of a teenage girl who has special powers- she has the ability to move objects with her mind. Her character is that she *constantly* gets picked on by all the girls in her gym class. They do some of the most revulting things imaginable to her.

Furthermore, her mother believes she is evil, so she constantly tries to save her daughter whenever the girl returns home from school by reading from the Bible, screaming in her daughters face that she's sinful, and other ways.

Basically, the girl has a bad life, haha. But... what goes around comes around, eh?

The majority of the storyline focuses on the senior prom dance, and what will happen when Carrie gets invited. Well I know one thing- her mother won't be happy about it, haha. This is when Carrie REALLY takes advantage of her special powers. She takes absolutely no crap from anyone, let's put it that way.

There are some unintentionally funny moments throughout the film, such as when the head girl in her gym class gets smacked around by her gym teacher and her boyfriend. It's because she doesn't know when to shut up, haha. She's *always* getting smacked around by someone.

John Travolta... WOW he looks young, haha. With long black hair, too. Surprising to see this. I didn't even recognize him at first.

Another interesting thing about the film is how Carrie becomes close to her gym teacher because she's the only one who understands how much Carrie is being picked on by her classmates. However, it's very surprising what happens to the gym teacher eventually.

Also, try to imagine school teachers acting the way they do in this film THESE days, haha. Hard to imagine.

This film is just really cool. It contains a really weird storyline, solid characters, and establishes Stephen King as a really good writer.

Movie Review: My favorite King movie and one of my favorite novels.
Summary: 5 Stars

Take note this review isn't on the dvd (I don't own it), but the movie itself. Stephen Kings Carrie is one of my all time favorite movies. Its one of those types of movies you just don't see made anymore. A movie that makes you sad, think, and root for the outcast over everyone else.

Carrie is about a shy, teenage girl named Carrie White. She has this crazy, f***ed up, religious nut of a mother who abuses and mistreats her since she was a little girl and often locks her in the closet to make her prey. Not only does she have to deal with a lunatic mother, but a bunch of evil, stuck-up b****es at school who torment her whenever they get a chance. One day in the lockerroom at school Carrie begans bleeding from her female area. Because her mom never taught her about womanhood she becomes extremely scared (don't blame her. Hurts like crazyXD) and on top of that them evil sluts at school throw tampons at her, upsetting her even more. In her intense emotional stress Carrie begans to slowly discover she has special powers. She has Telekinesis, meaning she can move objects just by thinking about them. Yall know where this is going.

I hope this brief summary explains the plot enough for those of you who aren't familiar with the story. The last 1/4 of the movie is my favorite part. Let me just quate what a woman on 100 scariest movie moments said "them bitches had it comin"! I watched the movie way before ever reading the book. One thing I found kind of disappointing in the movie is that it ends differently from the book. I liked the book ending better than the movies ending. I admit though the movie ending is much scarier and made me cry till my eyes hurt, but I found the book ending more emotionally scarring and intense. Other than that its a really good adaption that I watch every chance I get. I want to eventually buy it on DVD. There are two sequals. The second one is about Carries sister. Its pretty good. The 3rd is basically a remake of the first. ITs not as good as the first, but follows the original ending of the book more. I might buy them off Amazon. Carrie is a must watch. I also recommend the novel as well.

Movie Review: I Can See Your Dirty Pillows!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Stephen King's first novel that was adapted into film version is quite true to the author's words. While Stephen King was less than pleased with the film version of his malevolent masterpiece, "The Shining", King was quite happy with Brian De Palma's direction and his vision with "Carrie".
Sissy Spacek in her debut role as the freakish, shy and telekinetic Carrie White. Sissy beat out Melanie Griffith and Carrie Fisher for the title role that launched her career.

The beautiful Piper Laurie is cast as the ravenous religious fanatic, stark-raving, bible beating, madwoman and Carrie's mother, Margaret White who chastises Carrie relentlessly and has a penchant for locking her daughter in the closet with a really creepy, crucified Jesus statue and candles so that Carrie may repent of her evil, sinful and womanly ways.

Amy Irving as the well-to-do town doctor's daughter Sue Snell and Amy's real-life mom, Priscilla Pointer as the "cocktails at five socialite", Mrs. Snell.

William Katt plays Tommy Ross who asks Carrie to The Bates High School Senior Prom, the butch, Betty Buckley as the ultimate in P.E. teachers from Hell, Miss Collins, Nancy Allen , Brian De Palma's wife as the horribly cruel and self-absorbed, Chris Hargensen, John Travolta as the boy from the wrong side of the tracks, Billy Nolan and P.J. Soles, the "whore" from Halloween as Chris' best friend and partner in crime, Norma Watson.

Even a young Edie, (Grace from Ferris Buehler's Day Off and the car rental lady from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles) has a bit part.

The real star here, however, is Brian De Palma's direction and the cinematography in "Carrie". The opening shower scene rivals "Psycho", the Senior Prom dance scene makes the viewer dizzy no matter how small a screen you watch it on, the split-screen King and Queen and ensuing bloodfest is masterfully directed and shot along with the dream sequence that was filmed backwards in the end. However, my favorite scene is where Margaret White is crucified a la "creepy Jesus statue" style, by her own daughter!

A Top 10 Horror Film In My Book!

Happy Watching and Unpleasant Dreams!

Movie Review: The First Stephen King Adaption, and Still One of the Best.
Summary: 5 Stars

Now, Stephen King's adaptions are mostly famous for being bad, but if you watch some of his earlier adaptions, it's a shock to see how good they are. It seemed like the filmmakers were actually putting some effort into making a faithful adaption. For the last thirteen years or so, King has been obsessed with making all his novel adaptions TV-movies, but I feel theatrical presentation is still the best way to display King's books on the big-screen. King is a great writer, and when you get a good screenwriter and a respectable director, you have success.

And what I mean by 'success' is Carrie. Wow, what an amazing movie. This is the only King adaption that I like better than the book. much better, in fact. I liked the book, sure, but this movie really hightened the emotions, thanks to fabulous acting and great writing. And, also very important, the directing is astounding. Brian de Palma injects a lot of style into the film from frame one, a great crane shot of a volleyball match, all the way to the final scene, one of the most famous JUMP scares ever.

King's stories, and King himself, are famous for being horror stories, but I think that's a gross misjudgement. Carrie is NOT a horror story. Sure, the prom scene is pretty dang scary, but overall this story is a great tragedy. The movie really made this work well. You look at Sissy Spaceck, so brilliant as Carrie, and see the way everyone treats her, and how she reacts, and your heart pours out in pity to her. She's really a nice person. It seems everyone thinks of her as that girl at prom night, killing hundereds of schoolmates, but I think of her as a quiet, shy, sweet girl who never hurts anyone but is still treated like a complete joke. And I can totally understand why she snaps, in the end.

Words can't describe my feelings for this, but it's one of my favorite movies, and I'm actually watching it right now on MGMs glorious Special Edition. You should, too.

Other recommedntations: The Dead Zone, The Shining (strays totally fron the book, but has great visual style and is pretty scary) and The Stand (only good King TV-adaption).

Movie Review: De Palma's Standout Creation of King's Carrie
Summary: 5 Stars

The only flaw of this Brian Depalma vehicle is...dare I say this...the story? Yup, telekinetic devil child? It's certainly not boring but I almost can't possibly grant it a five star rating. I'm going to anyway. King's first novel is not his best, but it is still very good. I will assert that the film is actually better and Carrie is one of the best adaptations of a King novel ever made into a film. My hats off to Depalma for creating one of the scariest films of all time in the process. I'm a huge horror fan, so Carrie has quite a few things to take into account for your own tastes. It's a bit dated and requires some imagination from the viewer...I'm probably preaching the quire here anyway.

Most people my age have only seen the edited television version which is on about three or four times every Halloween. The made for television remake was a horrorshow in a different way because it came close to ruining the credibility of its original. Depalma holds back his amazing technical abilities intentionally and builds this tale of revenge and justice up for one of the most climatic sequences ever made. "They're all gonna laugh at you" rings in Carrie's ears after a bucket of pig's blood is dropped on her head...the music goes from extremely happy and glorious to tense and terrifying, the lighting goes from normal to blood red like Carries now blood soaked appearance. We go from feeling sorry for her to feeling sorry for the kids who we thought for one minute might deserve what's coming to them in a few moments. What follows is quite possible the most brilliantly filmed horror sequence ever. Split screening and panning from Sissy Spacek's amazingly tense eyes and face to her victims soon to be lifeless bodies. Then the fire comes in and we realize that these kids have unknowingly unleashed hell on earth. The film keeps going down a very dark road and doesn't disappoint.

Anyway, it's one of the greatest horror films of all time and is totally unforgettable. In the long run its films that you remember fully that stay intact as classics and Carrie is certainly one of them.
