Movie Reviews of CarolinaMovie Review: This film is a gift! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been anxiously awaiting the release of "Carolina" since I heard it was being made. Then, by a stroke of luck, I found out that I could order a copy of the movie from Canada. I did so immediately and was pleasantly surprised when my copy arrived in 2 short days. I skipped from the mailbox with my very own copy of "Carolina."My anticipation was rewarded with a wonderful film that had me laughing in one moment and in tears the next. The dynamic of this film is something we all deal with, family and love. This quirky, love filled family was wonderfully cast. Julia Stiles was perfect in the lead role, and Shirley Maclaine, was fabulous as grandma mirabeau.. Reminded me of another feisty southern belle she once portrayed.. Ouiser in Steel Magnolias. "Carolina" has that same character driven appeal. Jennifer Coolidge is one of my favorites, and who couldn't love a cameo by Barbara Eden! The film was beautifully written with some memorable one-liners, and by then end of the movie, you feel like you too are one of the family.. There are few movies that can do that these days. It has that independent movie feel to it, the kind of movie that you never really hear about a lot before it's released, but then all of a sudden is a huge box office hit. I only wish it had been released here in the US so it would have been given that opportunity. I would have loved to see it on the big screen! It's one of those movies that you share with your friends and family. And then perhaps there would have been a US DVD release with bonus material for those of us who waited so long for this great little film! If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. It is a movie that I will watch over and over again.. On those days when you just feel like you need a hug, "Carolina" is the loving grandmother who is there to oblige.

Movie Review: Wonderful, warm film! Summary: 5 Stars
This film is such a complete joy! It is the type of movie that touches you, and fills your heart and soul.
The DVD cover seems a tad misleading, because it is about so much more than a girl "meeting the boy of her dreams twice." It is about a real family, with real issues...and real love and warmth. The cast is so perfect, and what a great cast it is! Shirley MacLaine, Julia Stiles, Randy Quaid, Alessandro Nivola, Edward Atterton, Azura Skye, Mika Boorem, Jennifer Coolidge and a cameo by Barbara Eden.
The characters are people who you might even know. You see a flash of your brother in one moment or a glimpse of your aunt in another. Perhaps you will see parts of yourself in Carolina, or her grandmother. The movie is witty and warm on the whole, with a touch of sadness in places....just like life is. But you walk away feeling good. Katherine Fugate penned bright jewel here(she also wrote The Prince and Me). I look forward to seeing more of her work.
I heartily recommend it for anyone who enjoys something that touches your heart. It is the type of movie that I wish Hollywood would make more of....and actually put onto the big screen. It was a travesty that this never got allowed that chance here in the States. But I am grateful that I am given the opportunity to have my own copy and watch it whenever I want now. :)
Movie Review: CHECK OUT THE REAL 'AUNT MARILYN' Summary: 5 Stars
"The Strangest Treasure" music video on YouTube shows the real life women portrayed in 'CAROLINA' by Shirley MacLaine (Grandma Mirabeau) and Jennifer Coolidge (Aunt Marilyn). 'CAROLINA' is based on Katherine Fugate's wildly eccentric side of her family and is pretty accurate. Anyone who has watched 'CAROLINA' will find it fascinating to see the music video mentioned since it combines home movie extracts of the actual people the film is about. In "The Strangest Treasure" you'll discover that the real Marilyn is a platinum blonde more eccentric than Jennifer Coolidge, who portrays her in 'CAROLINA' (though the dialogue in the film is real). Several of Marilyn's girls, a pretty black one, white one and white one with an afro, are seen in front of the orange door of what had been Marilyn's most popular massage parlor. Marilyn's son, who helped manage the parlors and was nicknamed "J.P." for "Junior Pimp" (since he was still a high school student), is seen trying to climb out of a grave. Trivia: For some reason Katherine changed everyone's name in 'CAROLINA' except for her Aunt Marilyn's. Katherine's other favorite aunt, from the tamer side of the family, has an actual role in 'CAROLINA'. She is non other than the beautiful Barbara Eden. This is an accurate movie about a real life family and perhaps Katherine Fugate's (the writer's) farewell to them.
Movie Review: A Journey Not Easily Forgotten Summary: 5 Stars
This movie engages the viewer so much that I found myself still thinking about it days later. This is a real life story that is so often misplaced or missed altogether, in film today. As if peering unashamedly into a private journal, the movie Carolina makes us all the peeping tom to the journey of a life. That life being the story of Carolina and all who made an imprint in her young life. It is a story so foreign and yet so familiar that at times you must look away from the screen for fear of seeing familiar faces looking back. But the urge to continue along is too strong to not turn back. The relationships portrayed are brave in their bone-deep reality. The good, bad, and ugly are layed out for all to see and experience. And we come out contemplating our own history. The cast is perfect in their roles and shine especially, as an ensemble.
It is so easy to call this film inspiring, courageous, and almost honest to a fault. But really it is just a scrapbook held up to the light with the author, Ms Fugate, bravely saying, 'come over here, sit a bit, and let me share something truly special with you.' And for that Carolina truly is a gem.
