Movie Reviews of Carnival of Souls

Movie Review: Simply a classic. Also in color too!! This review is for the dvd itself not just the movie.
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not going into what the movie is about but i'm going to tell ya,this company did an excellent job restoring and colorizing this flick.they even restored it so you can catch it in all it's original black and white glory!!! If you're looking for gore this ain't gonna be your bag...but if you want to see a classic ahead of it's time this is a good one. and if you're thinking about trying to save a few bucks and buy the cheap version DON'T IT SUCKS big time, Trust me I own a copy. That's it for my review, but give this movie a watch and don't let it be forgotten by time as so many other greats have.

Movie Review: Nelson does it again
Summary: 5 Stars

Mike Nelson does it again. He makes a really bad movie into a funny movie! The colorization looks great. Half the time you are not sure what is going on. The director plays a character in the movie. Mike Nelson makes it easier to watch. If you need a good laugh I would recommend watching this movie, even though it was suppose to be scary....it's not.

Nostalgic. I used to watch this movie as a child in 60's and 70's. Very atmospheric and I love the organ music. Thank for the prompt service.

Movie Review: A classic film with a well-deserved reputation
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm specifically reviewing the Legend Films version of this DVD, with MST3K's Mike Nelson providing commentary. The first thing to be considered is the fact that this is a "colorized" version, and you will find that the "colorization" process has come a long way. In the early days, colorized films looked like black and white films with four pastel tints: blue, green, pink, and bronze. Nothing looked "natural." In this film, you will see a moment here and there in which a character has the old-style bronze skin tone, but those moments are too few to mention. "Carnival of Souls" was the forerunner of later...and better...films that followed, so the debate over whether this film should have been colorized at all is a matter of preference. The print is clean, it looks good, and that's what really matters.

This film was a wise choice for Mike Nelson's wise-cracking commentary (as well as the follow-up "RiffTrax" version with Kevin "Tom Servo" Murphy and Bill "Crow Mach II" Corbett). There are some killer scenes in the movie, blueprints that filmmakers still follow to this day...and long, long stretches of tedium. That's where Mike (on the DVD) and the "Three Riffers" (on commentary available from the RiffTrax Web Site) really shine.

Leading lady Candace Hilligloss made one other feature film..."The Curse of the Living Corpse," with a pre-"Jaws" Roy Scheider...available on the The Del Tenney Double Feature DVD.

Here, she's more than up to the task of portraying the heroine with a constant sense of foreboding. It's difficult to discuss the film without using spoilers (although it is so well known among fans of the genre). Many directorial aspects are reminiscent of schlock-gore pioneer Herschel Gordon Lewis (minus the gore).

At the time of this review (2009), the film is 47 years old. Many superior films have followed in its wake. If you're a fan of the classics like Night of the Living Dead (Millennium Edition), you may very well love it. If you define "horror movies" by modern-day works like Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects (Unrated Widescreen Edition), you might find yourself bored to tears.

Read the reviews, read what others have to say on the Web...this film is considered a classic for a reason.

Movie Review: "Carnival of Souls Will Never Die"
Summary: 4 Stars

Even though Carnival of Souls was industrial and educational
film maker Herk Harvey's lone entry into the commercial film
market, he managed to prove that a small budget could produce a
film that would somehow stand the test of time with a storyline that keeps you watching, without the gore, violence and overdone special effects of today's films.

This DVD is unique that it offers both the original Black and White version as well as a Colorized version, plus Mike Nelson's (of MST3K) optional commentary.

Candace Hilligoss gives a good performance as Mary Henry, a very bewildered and confused young lady who finally learns what her
ultimate fate is.

Others players in the film include Frances Feist as Mrs. Thomas, the landlady who seems to have a case of the weird herself, and who tosses off one of the film's most memorable lines. Sidney
Berger as John Linden, the next door neighbor who also happens
to be the resident letch.

Adding much to the film were the many scenes shot at Saltair,
the then abandoned and damaged amusement park on the shore of the Great Salt Lake. Not only was Saltair, the inspiration for Herk
Harvey's film, and an integral part of it, but was and still is
a place that is worthy of a documentary film of it's own due to
it's strange history.

If you have never seen Carnival of Souls, get this DVD, it will
be worth every penny.
