Movie Reviews of Carman - The Champion

Movie Review: Carman - The Champion
Summary: 4 Stars

I've enjoyed Carman as a singer & performer for years but wasn't sure how this movie would go over. I actually hadn't even heard of it until I saw it on the shelf in a video store. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the film, and plan to purchase it for our home library. Good for you Carman et al! Something worth watching that presented faith in God in such a way that it didn't feel like it was "being shoved down my throat!" Some of the scenes were a bit too predictable, but for a first attempt I thought it was very good.

Movie Review: Y'know, as an actor, he's a wonderful singer.
Summary: 2 Stars

There's no question that Carman is one of the great entertainers of our time. The fact that he's "working for the Kingdom" makes it even better. His voice is marvelous, his charisma is energizing, and his message is one of the most powerful you'll ever hear.

But there's a small part of me that thinks he should leave all of that on the stage and on his website. That tiny seed was planted after I saw this movie. There was a LOT of hype surrounding "The Champion" before it came out in theaters, especially on the Trinity Network, but as far as being as good as almost everyone said it would be, I just have to say...uh, no. As a movie, it falls just short of made-for-TV in quality, with a less-than-basic plot (you see just about everything that happens in this flick coming from a mile away), laughable action scenes, and dialogue that made me want to cringe at times. ([...] the Hispanic characters didn't even speak proper Spanish!) As a message, it falls just short of sending one. If there is a message somewhere in this flick, then what is it? "Don't get involved with the Mafia in order to achieve your dreams"? One would think that a movie like this would have a moral or something in it to help one grow spiritually, but I didn't see it at all. To me, it was like just about any other direct-to-video action-drama cheese that's out there. There were a couple of moments that'll stick with me, though; the "commercial shoot" was pretty funny (although they could've used ANY other product but that one), and the pre-match conference scene with the champ's "even God wouldn't recognize him" line. Otherwise, even Carman fans should steer clear of this one. Carman sends much more positive messages through his music, and far as me, that's what he should stick to.

Movie Review: A Christian film, but not a great one
Summary: 2 Stars

When such a mediocre effort as this is called a great Christian movie, it's sad for movie lovers and Christians. If this is the best Christians can do in cinema, they deserve to stay in the minority-propoganda-films-for-a-few niche they currently occupy.

The story is a has-been, the production values are no better than a bad TV movie, and the insertion of religion is trite. Though Carmen performed better than I expected, that's still not saying much. He and Stallone could team up -- though don't make the mistake of even mentioning this film in the same breath as ROCKY.

Hey, producers, you say you're Christians? Then give us some great movies for a change...

Movie Review: porn PETA star kissing Christian Pastor in "Christian" movie
Summary: 1 Stars

Doesn't make any sense. Patricia M. costars in this movie in the same year as she poses pornographically for PETA and after playing years on soap operas in Mexico. During the movie, as a married woman, she enters into deep french kisses with the Christian Pastor gifted musician, Carman.

I saw Carman's Christian concerts many years ago. Very emotionally charged exciting events where he tried to honor God with his gift and subdued the crowd, when they tried to turn the concert into a secular equivalent. What happened since then?

I am puzzled that this "Christian" movie, produced by a Christian, would have such strong immoral behaviors as ok? I just watched the movie and after googling the movie, I was shocked to find out that the actress was not only not his wife, she was married at the time, and was posing pornographically for PETA.

There are so many better Christian movies out there that do not normally compromise the Faith. I would not watch TBN, or any of their "Christian" movies ever again, unless I was absolutely sure that they had acknowledged their sins openly and in their confession had entered back into following The Historical Christ, our God.

Movie Review: Dissappionting all the way
Summary: 1 Stars

At first I liked it, but after watching it over and over, I got very dissapointed in Carman. The story was dragging it's way to the end, and the it just seemed so terriable. I think Carman should just stick to singing instead of acting. The acting was a total loose, and I just couldn't watch any more of it. I respect Carman's way of praising God, but I wish he could have made this movie more exciting than it already is. There was so many secnes I didn't care to watch and so many things I just couldn't get. I just couldn't take it anymore. Next time, if there is one I pray that he will do a better job at making a good story, and doing some serious acting. This one to me was a major flop.
