Movie Reviews of Carlito's Way

Movie Review: One of the best De Palma movies ever made
Summary: 4 Stars

When people will look back at De Palma's career besides the films Blow out, and Scarface, this is the film which will standout. This is one of those undiscovered gems, those films that never succeed initially at the box office but have true staying power like Raging Bull. One of the best acting performances ever captured on film is Sean Penn as a coke snorting lawyer. De Palma is also on in terms of directing (he can move that camera like no one else), and the movie contains one of the better, intelligently written screenplays to grace an action/drama movie in recent memory. Al Pacino is good, but slightly flawed as a Puerto Rican, you can tell he was still caught up in the Scent of a Woman character while this movie was being made. Still he is very dynamic, and at times brilliant. I would give it four and a half stars but the ratings don't allow it.

Movie Review: 'Here come da pain!'
Summary: 4 Stars

In 1983,Brian DePalma and Al Pacino collaborated to make the greatest movie of all time,Scarface.Ten years later they re-united to make "Carlito's Way",it doesn't quite scale the heights of their previous masterpiece but it is still a terrific movie. Carlito Brigante is an ex-con just out of prison determined to go straight. But his past keeps coming back to haunt him. Carlito is like an older, wiser version of Tony Montana.Al is excellent as usual. He looks the essence of cool with his slick Puerto Rican accent and beard(reminiscent of "Serpico",perhaps?) Sean Penn is brilliant as Al's coked up lawyer David Kleinfeld, who has hair like Art Garfunkel and glasses like John Lennon. I hope DePalma and Pacino will make another film together again in 2003.

Movie Review: Never seen this movie coming!
Summary: 4 Stars

I did not hear of this movie at all until it was displayed behind one of the cashier' display cases where they keep some stuff to show and I took immediate interest. It's a good movie but when I read the back and heard of the so called "sequel to scarface" quote on the back since the same director did the same movie I was excited to put this on. It's not the second scarface and frankly if you seen scarface...there will never be another scarface. I did take the quote lightly but this movie was about a man getting away from the life of intimadation, violence, and all the other stuff by getting caught with his past. It's still worth the watch if you were a fan of Scarface or a Pacino fan like me!

Movie Review: The great lost gangster movie
Summary: 4 Stars

A character driven piece on trust and loyalty with some explosive DePalma action, this is a real emotional ride, thanks to Pacinos tour de force lead performance. Unlike some of his other characters, you really care about this guy and his need to go straight. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Sean Penn exceeds at making his lawyer a repulsive whiny slug. Just sit back and watch these pros work a great story. Anyone who loved the Godfather or the Untouchables will love this, too. The DVD offers a great widescreen picture plus a trailer, but nothing else. The movie speaks for itself, though. I also love how it doesn't milk its 70's time setting. It's totally natural and real.

Movie Review: Good Movie From the Middle to the End
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie gets a 4 because the middle to the end of the film was really good. That's where all the action and drama come up. The beginning of the movie was not all that interesting as the last part was,the way I see it. The end was filled with all the backstabbings, betrayals, really smart moves, and action! I was glad when Carlito's (pacino) lawyer got dealt with in the end because he was so shady and conniving that no one knew it. Seriously, you could call this a Scarface-remake movie since Pacino, the thug dons, and thug storylines are in it, only thing is he tries to be good, though it's not that easy.
