Movie Review: Wonderful Movie!
Summary: 5 Stars
It's been a long time since we've watched a movie that captivated the entire family the way that this movie has. This is the way movies ought to be done. Excellent story (from Rudyard Kipling's classic book); excellent actors; excellent cinematography; excellent script; excellent timing. If you are wondering whether this is a movie appropriate for young children-- it is. The 7+ crowd will be held by the story of this young boy (aged 10) who learns some very valuable lessons about life, love, family, courage, and honor. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough! Based on a Rudyard Kipling story, this heartwarming adventure saga follows the transformation of a bratty pantywaist into a decent young man under the tutelage of Tracy's gentle fisherman. Bartholomew is a natural playing the self-centered child of privilege, and really clicks with Tracy, who won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance as the sensitive Manuel (though he hated putting on an Iberian accent). Absorbing for viewers of any age, "Captains" is a rousing tale whose bittersweet climax will not leave a dry eye on deck.Movie Review: Billy Joel sang ; "They don't make'm like that anymore."

Spencer Tracy plays this part with a comic edge that frustrates poor Bartholomew when Spencer in one scene while the two are in the life boat and he makes up tunes on the fly.
Cracks me up. You'd swear Spencer ad-libbed it with his style.
This movie will always be a favorite, but another is Spencer as Thomas Edison.

This movie is an oldie but goodie. The story is well presented and I like this version. It doesn't have the type of special effects used in the modern movies, but the story hauls you in and you feel more of the emotional effects of the action taking place. It is a classic and gives you an appriecation of the old time movie making.
