Movie Reviews of Cape FearMovie Review: Tight thriller with great acting. Summary: 5 Stars
I have decided to write reviews for both the original and remake of the fabulous film back to back. Gregory Peck play's Sam Bowden an lawyer with a nice family and a good structure around his life. He is unprepared however when Max Cady,Played with fantastic menace by Robert Mitchum, is released from prison and shows up in Bowdens life. Cady is angry with Bowden becouse he testified agianst him at a assault trial that resulted in Cady's incarceration. Two of the most different actors stay in this fantasticlly paced thriller. Mitchum is scary and itimmidating as Cady while Peck's Bowden is so reserved you wounder just what would happen if they got into a life and death struggle. This movie delivers on all leavels. You care about all the charators and feel a real sense of dread whenever Mitchum comes onto the screen. I also reviwed the other Cape Fear but forget the remake and see this one instead.
Movie Review: ALFRED HITCHCOCK WITHOUT HITCH!!! Summary: 5 Stars
The original Cape Fear is probably the best Alfred Hitchcock film not directed by the master. J. Lee Thompson does an excellent job directing a tight script. Hitchcock could very well be one of the most imitated directors and Thompson pulls it off without going over the top and giving his only little touches to this thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum are superb in the lead roles of two men playing a war of nerves with each other where there can only be one winner. I feel it's one of Mitchum's best roles and should have been giving an Academy Award for it, but they don't give awards for portraying evil, which he does with relish. The dvd transfer of the film is flawless and the mini-documentary give us some interesting insight on the making of the movie. A classic in all sense of the word.
Movie Review: The Classic Tale Of Good VS. Evil Summary: 5 Stars
The original "Cape Fear" is based on the novel "The Executioners". The original 1962 film is a classic tale of good vs. evil. Robert Mitchum perfectly portrays Max Cady, a force of pure evil who is on parole. Cady blames Sam Bowden, who was played flawlessly by Gregory Peck, for having sent him to prison. Sam is a good, ethical, and loving lawyer who is quite serious about his job. He loves his wife and daughter so dearly, and Max Cady can see that. Cady is clever. That's what's so frightening to Sam. Cady can basically stalk Sam all he wants, but it can't be proven that he's doing anything illegal. Finally, a trap is set to kill Cady within the bounds of the law. If the trap fails, all could be lost. This is a marvelous story that every film noir fan should see!
Movie Review: What a great movie Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the most suspenseful movies I have ever seen. Robert Mitchum is as good as a villain can get. He plays Max Cady, a man who was in jail for 8 years for sexual assault. As soon as he came back, he made it his purpose to get revenge on the man he felt was responsible for his jailtime, Gregory Peck, who was a witness to the crime.
This is a movie about human nature. It is a movie about fear. The premise is a very good one: What do you do when you know you are being plotted against? Peck could not have Mitchum arrested just for plotting against him and so he had to think up a plan.
The last scene in the movie is a classic one. It is an incredibly suspenseful nail-biting scene and the ending to the movie is a really great one.
Movie Review: Meet Fear Itself Summary: 5 Stars
Robert Mitchum plays Max Cady, an ex-convict who goes after lawyer Sam Bowden (Gregory Peck) who had testified against him and put him in prison. Seems like your typical stalker film. The only difference is that Cady had planned this out real well. Mitchum gives a creepy, degenerate performance ("I've got something planned for your wife and kid they ain't ever going to forget!") that somehow didn't get an Oscar nomination. I also note the lack of explicit content; there are some people beaten and assaulted in the film, yet little of the incidents are shown. Certainly, it would be different if made today (Come to think of it, it was some years back). I also congratulate Universal for their nice DVD edition.
