Movie Reviews of Cape Fear

Movie Review: Menace 2 Society...
Summary: 5 Stars

Two of the greatest actors of all time square off in this masterpiece of suspense and psychological terror. Gregory Peck (To Kill A Mockingbird, The Omen) is Sam Bowden, an upright lawyer. Robert Mitchum (Night Of The Hunter) is Max Cady, a cunning, violent madman who holds Bowden responsible for his 8-year prison stretch. Cady begins to stalk Bowden, his wife (Polly Bergen), and their teen daughter (Lori Martin). The tension builds as Cady slithers along, skirting the law, while terrorizing the family. Sam tries every legal thing he can think of, to no avail. Cady is too smart, and has waited far too long for his revenge! CAPE FEAR is in the same league as PSYCHO, A TOUCH OF EVIL, and other classics of the genre. Mitchum is pure eeevil, convincing us all that he's a very dangerous man who is capable of anything. His Max Cady, along w/ his preacher character from NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, are two of the most wickedly memorable roles in film history! Add this one to your collection immediately... P.S.- It's also fun to see Martin Balsam (Psycho), Telly Savalas (Horror Express, Lisa And The Devil), and Jack Kruschen (War Of The Worlds, Angry Red Planet) in their roles as well!...

Movie Review: Frightening story of revenge
Summary: 5 Stars

This intense 1962 thriller stars Gregory Peck as Sam Bowden, a lawyer who is being stalked by ex-con Max Cady (Robert Mitchum). It seems Sam withheld evidence at Cady's trial, and by doing so, helped send him to prison for years. Now, Cady's out and wants to get even by hurting Sam's wife (Polly Bergen) and daughter. They hide in a houseboat moored in Cape Fear, knowing Cady will do anything to get revenge.

Gregory Peck is outstanding as the dedicated attorney and desperate family man. Mitchum is so creepy and slimy in this film you'll be breathless watching his performance, which surely is one of his best. Every ounce of him seethes with hatred and evil. Polly Bergen and Lori Martin, as the daughter, are convincingly terrified as the ex-con gets closer and closer.

This version of the film is better than the remake, thanks to the fine acting of the stars and a script that will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you like chilling movies, you'll love Cape Fear.

Movie Review: This is THE One!
Summary: 5 Stars

This original production of the early 1960's Cape Fear is superior in every way to the remake in the early 1990's. The reason is that there is far more suspense, drama, and believability in the older one.

Sam Bowden (Gregory Peck) plays an attorney that sent Max Cady (Robert Mitchum) to prison for assault/rape. The time comes when Cady gets out of prison and seeks to exact revenge for 'eight long years in the bucket.' He returns to the city where Bowden and his family live and begins with thinly veiled threats against Bowden.

As the film progresses, the tension rises notch by notch as the interplay between Cady and Bowden becomes more intense. The climax of the film occurs on the Cape Fear river and is one of the most suspenseful and exciting ever. There is no gore in this film-it relies on the artistry and talent of the story and its actors. Not many movies made today can make that claim. I think this is Robert Mitchum's best movie ever. Five big stars for this one!

Movie Review: A TRULY TERRIFYING MOVIE
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this movie on TV as a child and was truly terrified by Robert Mitchum. He is an actor who was able to scare me without buckets of blood, profanity and other tactics that todays actors use. Mitchum was able to project a scary guy just by his voice, gestures and body language.

One of the best scenes was when Mitchum tried to pick up a woman in a bar and she asks "are you trying to pick me up?" and Mitchum answers "Yes" in a classic way that only he could pull off.

The most frightening scene, I thought, was the scene when Mitchum drowns the deputy, Kersek, in the river. The music was a factor in the chilling scene as well. As a kid, I thought this was terrifying and still do.

Mitchum terrorizes the audience by letting their imaginations work to where no violent or bloody scens are necessary.

Robert Mitchum is great in this movie. He's in a class by himself. No one before or since has been able to outdo his acting.

Movie Review: Stick With This One: The Original
Summary: 5 Stars

Boy, this shows that you can still make a scary movie without a lot of blood, profanity and whatever. Hollywood didn't learn that, however, featuring all of it less than a decade after this was made. The Martin Scorcese 1991 re-make of this movie is exactly what I'm talking about.

This original Cape Fear was legitimately scary, thanks to the performance of Robert Mitchum, who doesn't need to resort to the f-word to be a tough, sick and really an evil character as he stalks Gregory Peck and his wife (Polly Bergen) and daughter (Lori Martin).

Bergan and Martin are two women I don't see too much in films which is too bad. They did a lot more TV work than movies. Another thing you don't see much anymore - a nice, sympathetic policeman - was also portrayed in here nicely by Martin Balsam.

The ending has some holes in it, to be sure, but overall it offers a good 106-minute suspense story.
