Movie Reviews of Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

Movie Review: Bar none, the ULTIMATE Letdown in horror hearsay!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

The very first time I heard about this movie was from reading a book interviewing directors, writers, and producers from the italian gore trend of the 70's and 80's (Fulci, Argento, Massacessi, Deodato, Soavi, Fragrasso etc...) called "Spaghetti Nightmares". I used this book as a resource for my senior English paper over modern horror films. Anyways, being a fan of horror movies, I had heard about some of those film makers, but never about Ruggero Deodato. His interview was short, but it made numerous references to Cannibal Holocaust. Other directors in the book who mentioned him said that it was his best film. However, being that I had never heard of Ruggero, this film, or any of his films,I quickly forgot all about it. fast forward a couple of years to about a month ago and I find myself studying the grindhouse release of Cannibal Holocaust at my local Borders bookstore. The packaging was this massive black box with a circular photo of a screaming woman covered in blue stuff (mud) being viewed through a camera lense. The title was in raised, dripping blood red letters, and at the bottom of the front cover was the disclaimer, "The most controversial movie ever made!" flipping it over to the backside, I was immediately caught by the quote from Tim Lucas in the bottom right-hand corner saying "bar none-the most terrifying movie I have ever seen!" the synopsis told of the "found footage" plot and mostly about the banning and court cases involving Deodato over this film (which I already knew about from reading SN). Now, I was completely intrigued. I went home and went to my favorite movie review search engine and pulled up about two dozen reviews for this movie. And you know what? Every last one of them said that Cannibal Holocaust was THE most shocking, THE most disturbing, and THE most affecting horror film of all times!!! My response to this was total amazement! All of the reviews praised the film on a technical level, but every critic had something to say about "freedom of speech" and how this movie is the definitive "have they crossed the line?" film experience of all time. They unamanousely agreed that CH seperates the men from the boys. One critic even went on a lecture about the "ultimate" human fear of being devoured for nutrition instead of recieving a proper burial and that we fear this most because humans have no natural enemies. All of the reviews here on Amazon said similar things, and here somewhere, somebody actually said they needed pyschiatric help after watching it!! Friggin' Awesome!! Now I was totally psyched! I needed this movie!
So I bought it, took, it home, opened it (that was really difficult by the way, the plastic case takes some force to open, and you have to align the two halves of the box just right or it won't close, I'm guessing this is a way to discourage small children from opening it)and put it in my DVD player. What did I feel after watching it? Not one of the emotions that the critics told me I would feel! Cannibal Holocaust is not a shocking film. The violence and gore? The gore in this movie is just Dawn of the Dead all over again. It looks realistic just like Dawn, and is even more realistic because most of the gory scenes are shown on the 16mm footage and is also shot from a distance to further obscure the appereance of special effects malfunctions. The sex and nudity? I'm and adult, so I know what sex is and I've seen naked people before, so it didn't get me there either. The seens of rape are all "softcore" style-its suggested but actual penetration is never filmed. And what about the reviled animal killing scenes? Well, I have caught and clean (disembolwed for cooking)fish before, and on the saturday morning hunting shows on the OLN network, they show the killing and occasional cleaning and or preparing for taxidermist work of real-killed dear. This is on right about the time cartoons are being shown for kids. They didn't get me in the gut on that one either. So why did I give CH a full five stars? Its really simple. Cannibal Holocaust is a very good movie. The plot is logical and offers an unusual and interesting style, the music is excellent, the effects are good, the acting is above par for this type or genre of film, and the overall effect of this movie, which is suppose to blur the lines of realism and fiction, is sublime. Cannibal Holocaust is an excellent film. I don't recommend it as "the one that goes too far", but as a truly well made film that belongs in the classics category, horror or otherwise.
