Movie Reviews of Cannibal FeroxMovie Review: A Cannibal Classic Summary: 4 Stars
If there's any film from the Cannibal genre that's comparable in gore/hype to Cannibal Holocaust, it has to be this one, Cannibal Ferox. Truthfully the two films are more the same than they are different, but depending on what you look for in a movie you could favor either one over the other. As for Ferox, this one doesn't bother much with underlying messages of the cruelty and savagery of civilized man. Instead it's more of the sky-is-the-limit gore, torture, and nudity with little emphasis on the story and messages.
In short, a brother and sister team of anthropologists along with a friend venture into the jungles to disprove the idea of cannibalism altogether. When they become lost, they have a run in with a fellow explorer named Mike along with his colleague who tell the tale of the brutal and savage cannibal tribes. However when they take refuge in the natives town, the truth begins to unravel about who was the violent and cruel one. The frightened and untrusting natives then attack and administer revenge on this group of strangers.
The movie is pretty straight forward, loads of gore keep the entertainment value high and you don't have to think to hard to keep up with this one. Surprisingly the animal cruelty was just as abundant here as it was in Cannibal Holocaust including detailed footage of a small mammal being crushed and consumed by an enourmous snake, a familiar looking scene involving a large turtle, and even some natives feasting on the innards of a small alligator. However, the mood is never as dark or ominous as it is in Holocaust, mostly due to the trademark low budget cannibal flick feel throughout. Not to mention the super cheesy score that had me grinning ear to ear.
The only thing that slowed this movie down is a completely unnecessary subplot about a drug dealer that takes place in New York. It explains why one of the characters ended up in the jungle in the first place, but absolutely nothing else as you'll come to find. Other than that this was a great cannibal movie and an asset to the genre. Shocking and gory? To the die-hard and thoroughly jaded horror fan, not by a longshot. But to anybody not accustomed to this type of film, Ferox is gauranteed to disgust. Enjoy!
Movie Review: The Secret Ingredient Summary: 4 Stars
Well, the first thing most of you want to know is the quality of the splatter. By 1983 standards, it is at least 4-star splatter. If you like Italian horror and a true "not-for-the-squeamish" warning, Cannibal Ferox delivers.
Now, onward. There's a great performance in this movie, which frankly, surprised the hell out of me. Giovanni Lombardo Donati is all teeth and gristle as the real bad guy. He gleefully betrays, seduces, and divides the rest of the herd of Americans like the kind of jerk you would want to stick with on a reality show because it's your best chance at winning. He makes evil and moral compromise look fantastic and seems to be having a jolly time doing it throughout the movie. He damn near upstages the machetes, entrails, and Italo-disco, a formidable accomplishment in a flick like this. That he turns into an unusual hor d'oeuerve at the end, only makes me want to hand him an Oscar that much more.
Movie Review: Loads of gore... but not the best movie. Summary: 4 Stars
People looking for blood, guts, and mutilation will find it all in this movie. This is one of those "must watch" movies for horror fans and anyone who likes to be grossed-out. But this has nothing else to offer than that. it's a poor movie overall and it lacks any social commentary. This is a legendary movie because of the scenes where genitals and breasts are mutilated. Fun to watch once, like many horror movies of this genre, but not really a quality film.
Movie Review: Solid Cannibal flick, but not as violent as it's said to be. Summary: 3 Stars
Cannibal Ferox has been dubbed the most violent movie ever and was even banned in 31 countries. While there are plenty of gore moments, Cannibal Ferox is nowhere near being the most violent movie ever and honestly I cannot see why this was banned in 31 countries.
As I said there is plenty of gore, but I have seen far gorier movies from the time Cannibal Ferox was made.
I don't get the big deal about the violence when honestly it's kinda tame compared to a lot of movies coming out of Italy at that time.
Like most cannibal movies not a whole lot happens early on, but once it gets going it doesn't let up. You know you have seen one too many Italian horror flicks when you know pretty much the entire cast from other movies.
Cult actor Giovanni Lombardo Radice going under the name John Morghen steals the show. This guy is excellent like always and no surprise he has a rather violent death, but doesn't he pretty much always have that?
If you've seen other movies by Umberto Lenzi than you should know what to expect, while not a good filmmaker Lenzi knows how to make an enjoyable cheesy movie.
For those who have never seen this before don't buy the hype about the violence. I think it's safe to say if you are reading this you have either seen the movie or if not you are a fan of Lenzi or you are a fan of these types of movies.
If the latter is the case than odds are you will probably agree with me about the violence. If you are new to these movies however than Cannibal Ferox will be quite graphic and gory.
There are animal killings so if you are sensitive to that type of stuff than avoid. Here is a bit of trivia Giovanni Lombardo Radice's character kills an animal, but he refused to do it. A double was used even though Lenzi tried to convince him to do it.
Overall Cannibal Ferox is a solid entry in the cannibal sub-genre and fans of Lenzi or cannibal flicks or just cheesy Italian horror movies should enjoy.
Movie Review: A matter of taste, to coin a phrase. Summary: 3 Stars
People either love or hate the cannibal subgenre, but if you love it or are just trying it out, "Cannibal Ferox" is one of the two films that you should watch. When all the debating is finished, the acting, art direction, writing - none of these things are terribly important in these films. They are a series of extreme gore setpieces, period.
A word of warning: be wary if buying this DVD from marketplace merchants, because there is at least one who is actually selling his own "version" of this film, which is a no-frills DVD, no extras, different artwork, etc. If a different version is mentioned in the comments, or the title is actually the AKA "Make Them Die Slowly," avoid it.
