Movie Review: Pleasantly Surprised

After watching the movie and reading some of the reviews here, it has me a bit puzzled as to what movie some of these people were watching. This movie, considering it was made in the early 80's and on a budget of next to nothing, is excellent. This is what the horror genre should strive to be once again and I think there is a renaissance of sorts coming in the genre. The special effects are first rate and very realistic, especially when you consider that the technology of the period was nothing like it is now and the low budget this flick was made off of. The plot is okay and the acting is pretty good especially with all things considered. The scenery was beautiful
Despite the fact I was surprised by the lack of violence(I was expecting some seriously hard core stuff), the movie overall was pretty good. The main characters, the cannibals, the setting.
Will watch again in the future

Cannibal flicks always go a little further than your average Italian gore-fest and are definitely my favorites, because when I watch a horror movie I want to be rupulsed and disgusted(see definition of horror)I don't want to see little creepy kids that they put in every pop-horror movie now, that [...] doesn't scare me, this scares me. Not on the same level as "Cannibal olocaust" but pretty close. THIS IS REAL HORROR!Movie Review: excellent!!!!

I don't care what Eli Roth says about Cannibal Holocaust - this film is by far superior. For what it is - this is the best of its kind. I remember renting it as a teenager with my best friend from a suncoast video store (we didn't even need a parent to rent it, mind you) and we were blown away. This is the second best/most disturbing film next to Cannibal Holocaust which will always be the champion. But thats not taking anything away from Cannibal Ferox which was banned in 31 countires and contains some of the most brutal scenes ever filmed. Films like CANNIBAL FEROX always get recognition through word of mouth and the subliminal under tone that you shouldn't be watching something like this. These type of movies are grouped together with such notorious films as FACES OF DEATH and the like. Usually lumped together in the "cult" and exploitation genre in the wide world of Horror. It's a strange scene really because most of these films are uber violent, ultra ignorant (catering to America's misinformation on foreigners and the unknown) and usually have a revenge type ending. They also usually have terrible acting and some times these movies tend to drag a little bit in the story department. This is truly a genre for only those who are into this type of thing. These aren't the type of movies that win over fans of SCREAM, I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and the (God help us) TWILIGHT crowds. Movies like this are for those of us that enjoy bad acting, bad editing, bad production and pretty much bad everything! They don't call this "underground cinema" or "cult movies" for nothing!
The most popular of these films is CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST but I personally find it lacking. In my opinion, CANNIBAL FEROX is much better and more enjoyable. This movie has it all, even for the most jaded of Horror movie buffs. Real life animals getting killed on screen (not something I condone but I do like to be shocked when I'm watching a Horror movie), plenty of nudity, buckets of fake blood and latex, funny dialogue and an enjoyable story line.
Basically the movie is about three American's (two are Brother and Sister) who go to the jungle to debunk some common myths regarding cannibalism. Through their adventure in the dense jungle, they run into two other American's who have apparently been savaged by a local tribe who killed and ate one of their group. Things aren't what they seem as our initial group of American's discover their story is actually the other way around. The two American's they ran into are the ones who ravaged a local tribe of old people and children, looking for diamonds. The younger members of this tribe are gone hunting but eventually they come back and find their village destroyed and many of their women and children dead or worse.
Needless to say, things don't go well for our American friends. Even the ones that had nothing to do with the destruction of their village. The rest of the movie is spent watching these young American's being tortured for their crimes and eventually eaten, thus the title CANNIBAL FEROX. It's a rather dismal movie that doesn't offer any real hero's with the exception of maybe the Brother and Sister. The two other American's are crazy, not to mention stupid for doing their crimes. By the time they're tortured and killed, you actually want them to get their just desserts. Especially the drug using "leader" of the Americans.
Over all, it's a simple story that doesn't need anything else to make it a classic. This is just a gruesome film with only a few things on it's mind. Revenge, death and cannibalism. The story is meant to evoke the fears of a world that most American's don't understand and in that regards, it succeeds well enough. The plot itself might be a little tame for todays audience, but the heartless characters and mindless buckets of blood are shocking enough to satisfy those looking for this type of thing.
Gore Hounds, do I even need to say it? With a name like CANNIBAL FEROX, you pretty much know what your getting into. In other words, death and cannibalism! People are hacked up, chopped up and eaten alive! Animals don't get it any better either and their deaths are real!
This type of movie isn't for everybody but to those who know what they're getting into, it's a gold mine of gore and sleaze! Watch with caution. Gore Hounds only!
