Movie Review: An urban legend comes to life, if you just call his name
Summary: 4 Stars

Candyman is an exploration of urban legends and what underlies those legends. Helen Lyle is a graduate student at the University of Illinois, working on a thesis about "Candyman," a legend of Chicago's Cabrini Green projects. Candyman was the son of a freed slave; his father had amassed a fortune after his release, and Candyman had grown up with all the niceties. He was a talented portrait artist, and fell in love with one of his subjects, a white subject. Her father punished Candyman by having a mob cut off his right hand and spread his body with the honey from a swarm of angry bees. Candyman was stung to death. His body was burned and the ashes spread across Cabrini Green.

Today, the Candyman legend remains; a supernatural man with a hook for a hand who kills indiscriminate of age, gender, or race, fueled by the wrath that his mistreatment ignited. The people of Cabrini Green believe, writing "Sweets to the Sweet" in places where murders have taken place, as a kind of protection against Candyman's anger. Helen's goal is to tie the legend to real murders by real people, to show the underlying truth behind the legend.

But she doesn't believe in Candyman, and that irritates him. He punishes her with a string of murders, each pointing to her as the suspect. She has two choices: be imprisoned forever in a hospital for the criminally insane, or join Candyman as his lover. To survive, Helen will have to find a way to put Candyman back in his box, the box she opened when she called out "Candyman, Candyman, Candyman."

Movie Review: CANDYMAN IS GONNA CARVE YOU UP, BABY!

9/08: Candyman is a slickly and craftily made horror thriller but can be boring at times. If anything to watch for, it's Virginia Madsen's performance as Helen Lyle that makes the biggest difference in Candyman. She was strong, assertive, and very good playing the woman who appreciates and respects reality. The story is quite innovative and different, but it didn't really provide enough of suspense as I had hoped for. Tony Todd is effective as Candyman and makes the best of his limited acting ability. Bernard Rose does a great job of delivering a very above average directional effort. What I appreciate about Candyman is its intricateness of the story, and that kept me revisiting the film more than several times over the years. Although I have not seen the two sequels, I am still looking forward to them, and they probably will suck for sure. One scene I am pretty impressed with is when both Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd are covered with bees; I couldn't imagine how they did that and endured the ticklishness. There are plenty of gore scenes, especially when Candyman rips the flesh of some, using his meat hook. All in all, not exactly scary or suspenseful, Candyman is a very respectable addition to the horror genre. Due to its slowness, I am bringing the rating of Candyman down from `8' to `7'.

Movie Review: TWO THUMBS UP !!!
Summary: 4 Stars

AS I HAVE WRITTEN IN OTHER HORROR MOVIE REVIEWS, CANDYMAN IS A WONDERFUL CLASSIC THAT GAVE ME MY FIRST NIGHTMARE IN YEARS. IT WASNT JUST THAT I WAS FRIGHTENED, THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF THE FOLKLORE/LEGEND GOT TO ME. I WAS YOUNG, IMPRESSIONABLE, AND OF COURSE SO VERY BRAVE. AT A SLEEP OVER, SOME FRIENDS AND I HAD RENTED THE MOVIE.RIGHT AFTER WATCHING THE MOVIE, WE FELT THE NEED TO PUSH THE ENVELOPE OF OUR OWN BOREDOM AND SPK THE UNSPKABLE NAME FIVE TIMES IN THE MIRROR. OF COURSE GIGGLING TEENS THAT WE WERE IT TOOK A FEW TIMES TO BUILD UP THE INITIAL COURAGE, BUT ALAS WE DID IT...AND NOTHING. BUT STILL THAT NIGHT IT LEFT ITS LASTING IMPRESSION ON ME AND MY YOUNG MIND, PRODUCING A MOST GRUESOME NIGHTMARE. MAYBE IT WAS OWN SUBCONCIOUS OR MAYBE THE LEGENDS TRUE WHO KNOWS, I JUST KNOW THAT FROM THAT DAY FORWARD I NEVER SPK HIS NAME ( CANDYMAN ) NOR HERS (BLOODY MARY ) IN A JKING FASHION AGAIN. I JUST KNOW THAT CANDYMAN FREAKED ME OUT....AND THAT IS WHY IT DESERVES THE SHEER RESPECT OF HORROR CRITICS ALIKE***

Movie Review: solid horror flick
Summary: 4 Stars

as horror movies go,this one is pretty good.it's from the imagination
of Clive Barker.it's basically a movie about an urban legend involving
the title character, and one woman's research into urban legends and
folklore.without giving anything away, she gets way more than she
bargained for.The character of Candyman is certainly creepy, and the
movie has a very good atmosphere.the acting is good and Tony Todd is
terrific in the title role.there are some real eerie moments.the one
thing i didn't like was i thought the violence was too excessive.the
movie is not groundbreaking or anything, but still,i enjoyed it.i don't
think it as good as another Clive Barker creation,Hellraiser, which i
thought was groundbreaking.for me,Candy man is a 4/5

Movie Review: Overall a Pretty Good Film
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie stands out for its on-location depiction of inner-city Chicago. It is an urban Chicago movie which gives you a real flavor of Chicago. To make matters more intersting it deals with the notorious Cabrini-Green housing projects too, with great authenticity. It deals with inner-city Blacks in a frank and believable manner. The story line is pretty strong and the performances are good. A good B movie over all, a low budget gritty true-to-life movie that will only get better with time. Oh, and it is creepy and scary too.
