Movie Reviews of CandleshoeMovie Review: fun-filled Disney adventure! Summary: 5 Stars
CANDLESHOE is a fun-filled adventure from Disney with Jodie Foster leading the cast of veteran actors. This was Foster's second Disney movie of 1977 (the other being the delightful FREAKY FRIDAY). The story is based on Michael Innes' book "Christmas at Candleshoe".
The movie opens with feisty orphan Casey (Jodie Foster), who is convinced by slimy opportunist Harry Bundage (Leo McKern) to pose as the long-lost granddaughter of Lady St. Edmund (Helen Hayes). Once inside Lady St. Edmund's Candleshoe estate, Casey must find the valuable treasures hidden there. With some 'help' from ex-housekeeper Grimsworthy (Vivian Pickles), Casey is given the first clue to finding the loot, but soon her loyalties are put to the test when she grows fond of Lady St. Edmund and her family of orphan children (Veronica Quilligan, Ian Sharrock, Sarah Tamakuni and David Samuels).
David Niven also puts in a delightful performance as Lady St. Edmund's faithful butler Priory, a man of many guises! Disney's attempt at an ANASTASIA-style adventure mystery is one of their finest movies of the late 70's. Jodie Foster gives an amazing performance as cynical street-urchin Casey. Helen Hayes, as always, offers a touching portrait of comedy and wisdom as Lady St. Edmund. Leo McKern and Vivian Pickles are hilarious as grasping villains Bundage and Grimsworthy.
The movie is presented in pleasing 16:9 enhanced widescreen. Sadly, no extras to speak of. Originally released by Anchor Bay, now being distributed under the Walt Disney banner proper.
Movie Review: Helen Hayes And Jodie Foster. Two Of Disney's Best Stars. Summary: 5 Stars
I think most people express their love of this movie so well there is not much more to add. It's a wonderful family film and a true classic Disney treasure. I love Helen Hayes, she was one of Disney's brightest stars. She was charming and wholesome, which is so appropriate for Disney. I hope Disney never loses it's wholesomeness. Wholesome is the foundation of the whole organization. I hope they never lose that quality.
I heard from one reviewer online that this film has developed a cult following in England with some college students. That's just great. I hope more attention can be brought to this deserving little film.
For anyone interested in more Helen Hayes Disney classics, I suggest the hilarious 'One Of Our Dinosaurs is missing'.

the whole Dean Richards thing is a mistake. can't seem to change it
Movie Review: Where Have You Seen This Plot Before? Summary: 5 Stars
Descriptions of Candleshoe's plot abound giving many details BUT I remember this very same plot - - -from Mr. Disney no less --- from my own childhood.
Mickey Mouse Club Anyone? The third segment of the daily offering just before the cartoon? The daily serial designed to magnetically pull viewers away from Howdy Doody?
Com'on folks. Tim Consedine and Tommy Kirk in the Hardy Boys' Mysteries? The Treasure? Where it turns out to be hidden?
This is almost a ver-batum update of the Applegate Treasure mystery as presented in 1956 or 1957. The clues were discovered in their sepuence by the boys in the one version and by Jodie Foster in the latest. One is set in an old stateside Victorian mansion and the other is set in an aging British mansion.
Great show even if it was done many years before as a tv serial by the former Disney cast regulars.
Movie Review: Disney Classic! Summary: 5 Stars
CANDLESHOE is one of those great classic Disney movies that the whole family can watch. It has mystery, suspense, and a heart-warming ending that ends in happily ever after...
Watching this, reminds me of the "Wonderful World of Disney" and "Disney's Wonderful World" tv specials that used to air on the weekends during the 70s.
And Jody Foster is great portraying the tough, street-wise tomboy Casey.
Unfortuately there are no special features on this dvd, unlike the FREAKY FRIDAY dvd that featured an interview with Foster.
But it's presented in widescreen format and looks clean and sharp, although there are a couple of dust and scratches that show up on certain frames. Still, the movie is just as enjoyable to watch now as it was then, whether you have kids or not.
Movie Review: "Absolutely Wonderful Family Film" Summary: 5 Stars
This film is the type all families should watch together. It is funny, touching and has a slight touch of mystery. Jodie Foster, Helen Hayes and David Niven all give outstanding performances. This film was made in the 70's and typifies exactly what a "family" film should be. It is truly a shame these types of films are no longer made. I looked and looked for this title. The Official Disney Store wasn't offering Candleshoe at this time, Best Buy didn't have it in their store and so on. I finally found it together with several others in this genre at Amazon.Com. The Disney Studios should look in their "vault" to remember what the name "Disney" was built on. Their recent forays have sadly missed the mark for a true "family" film. This film is great for one and all!
