Movie Reviews of Camille

Movie Review: Radiant
Summary: 5 Stars

Garbo plays the consumptive Margarite whose meaningless existence among the upper classes of 1840s Paris is redeemed by the love of Armand (Robert Taylor). She loves him back with all her heart - until Armand's father (Lionel Barrymore) begs her to let his son go because her past reputation might ruin his career. She does and goes back to her hideous Parisian society, keeping her love for Armand deep in her heart. She succumbs to the consumption and on her deathbed, Armand, who of course doesn't understand why she dumped him and can only feel hurt, comes to visit her. She dies in his arms. Garbo is simply radiant here; she mesmorizes us with every move she makes, especially her facial expressions, which tell more in a fleeting moment than reams of words could. It's a beautiful picture with Garbo at her peak.

Movie Review: A classic tragedy
Summary: 5 Stars

The realities of Paris courtesans from another age. Like pretty flowers, they have their moments in the sun before they start to fade. Camille makes the error sometimes made by courtesans, i.e., they cannot fall in love with a client because marrigage of a courtesan to a man from the upper social structure is not going to happen. It is a great role by Garbo, leading to a tragic ending. The motion picture can make you cry. The film was produced in the late 1930's and shows up again from time to time. It is black and white made using the technology of that era. Don't expect modern technology wonders.

Movie Review: Finally, the Nazimova/Valentino version as well!
Summary: 5 Stars

As much of a treat as finally having the Garbo Signature Collection released on DVD is, one of the great joys of these new releases is finally getting the opportunity to see the Nazimova/Valentino/Rambova modernized version of the Dumas classic. Nazimova is an actress one hears much of in classic film fan circles, but so little of her work is actually available to view that finally getting a chance to see a full length "Camille" was an overdue and treasured experience.

Bravo to Garbo/Young, but bravo also to the charismatic pairing that was Alla Nazimova and Rudolph Valentino.

Movie Review: Best Movie of all Time
Summary: 5 Stars

I first found this movie by renting it at the library, and instantly fell in love. Not just with the handsome lead actor, Robert Taylor, but the entire movie. I think all the actors did a superb job!The costumes are gorgeous! I loved the scenery, especially when they passed the Barons "castle", and when Armand (Taylor),takes Marguerite(Garbo),out to the country! Armand falls instantly in love, but Marguerite seems to play between the handsome younger Taylor, and the rich Baron at first, but then falls hopelessly in love with Armand, only to find out her health is rapidly failing her.

Movie Review: Excellent in every way!
Summary: 5 Stars

This has been one of my favorite classic movies for years and I'm very satisfied with this newly restored version. It has lots of extras and great artwork. If this film where ever to be remade, I don't think it would ever be as great as this version. There will never be another Garbo unfortunately. She was truly one of the greatest actresses of all time. This movie makes me cry every time.
