Movie Reviews of Camille ClaudelMovie Review: Camille pour toujours! Summary: 5 StarsThis movie is wonderful, its my favorite French movie of all time! Adjani does a wonderful job of portraying Camille and Depardieu is a great Rodin. The movie makes a person think about their relationships with other people and just how important they can be, sometimes you can love a person to the point of insanity. Then when they leave, your entire world is turned upside down. Camille is obviously a better sculptor than Rodin, who seemingly uses her talents for his benefits, then casts her aside as if she is nothing. The overall tone of the movie is sad, but Camille Claudel can be seen as a role model for anyone who was ever in love and the lesson to be learned from her life is never to love someone so much that it ruins you.
Movie Review: Camille Claudel - A Woman Is Not An Island Summary: 5 StarsIt has been said that "man is not an island," but in a woman's case, especially in Claudel's time, this was sadly so. I use that quote as an ironic twist to Camille Claudel, who certainly did become an island in her time, but re-emerged like one of Rembrandt's classics, restored, vibrant, alive. For anyone who doubts that there is real artistic spirit and drive, for anyone who doubts the beauty of perserverance, for anyone who doubts integrity and the power of love - I recommend you not only watch this film, but read the life story of Camille Claudel. She is a flame that had been put out too soon, and a rarity that only occurs every once so often in the framework of time. I enjoyed very much Adjani's portrayal of this self-willed, determined, and yet heartbreakingly agonized woman -- and it shows us what a sacrifice she made to produce her art. Mad? Perhaps a little, but she lived and died for her art, how many people can say the same for anything at all anymore?
Movie Review: MAGNIFIQUE!!!!!!!! Summary: 5 StarsAdjani is one of the most passionate performers I have ever seen. There are two scenes where she yells at Rodin that are very dramatic and emotional and you feel her pain, one is where she is yelling at him in her studio and another where she is yelling his name outside his home. Depardieu is amazing as Rodin. I don't speak French and followed by the subtitles. I would have never known "Camille Claudel" existed until this movie. She was brilliant, passionate, and it's a shame that she was driven mad by Rodin because she would have been the "female Michelangelo" but wound up spending her last years in a mental institution and most of her sculptures ruined and destroyed by her madness. A must see!
Movie Review: Profoundly sincere, superb acting, and hauntingly beautiful! Summary: 5 StarsWhile the movie portrays a bittersweet story of two great sculptors and their relationship, it is to me essentially a story about the creation of art as a process. The performances given by Depardieu and Adjani were superb and sincere. The images realized within the film are hauntingly beautiful. The cinematography sophicated. The only regret is that the film is currently only available on VHS format. I'm hoping that the film will be made available on DVD format so that I could purchase it for years to come.
Movie Review: "Rodin! Ro-diiiiiiiiin!" Summary: 5 StarsSo screams Claudel (Adjani) to attract the attention of Rodin (Depardieu) after he as abandoned her for his wife (!). This haunting film is a must-see for anyone who has been undone by love, or for anyone who has done the undoing. Claudel's spiral from artisic genius (it was Rodin who copied her magnificent and groundbreaking work) into insanity is brilliantly portrayed. This film is more than just eye candy for Adjani and Depardieu fans, it's a wonderful lesson in art history. Through it, we learn how Rodin became known as the first artist to make sculptures. Before he met the passionate Claudel, the world had only seen statues.
