Movie Reviews of Camille Claudel

Movie Review: a fascinating woman and artist ... broken under a world which did respectively she could not open up
Summary: 5 Stars

A life in-between mania and raging passion
This touching movie - shot in following the biography written by Reine-Marie Paris - respects Camille Claudel and her tragic life most powerfully.

Isabell Adjani who pictures an amazingly striking similarity of the original gets herself as actress brilliantly into Claudel's personality which again and again links up a paranoid disorder with a brilliant sculptor in her own right and kind on its way down to an obsessively self created social withdrawal, unavoidably for women at those time.
Absorbingly, impressively and intensely Adani dominates for nearly 3 hours this dramatic course of paranoid schizophrenia of this extraordinary lady artist, an illness which is nurtured by affective, creative and wrecking actions and "happenings" and which - in a world dominated by men - has impeded her development of a successful and harmonious sculptress.

Undoubtedly, Claudel's fascinating fine art works of "A revolt against nature: a woman genius" [Octave Mirbeau] emerged from an intensive and artistically minded, worthwhile love affair with Auguste Rodin, perfectly played by Depardieu, a relationship which supported Rodin by its discrepancy and conflict as well but which, however, finally ended for Claudel in apathy and paranoia after a life of dissipation.

This movie is really genially directed by Nuytten and shows without beating about the bush or any kind of glorification this tragically ending, close companionship, a companionship which could have guided both to a cohabitation but - paradoxically supporting their individual great artistic intentions - split them instead due to two distinctly conflictive and contrary emotions and reasons.

... a most convincing und straight forward documentation about the 1st half of the life of a highly gifted artist

Movie Review: hey mister video reviewer
Summary: 5 Stars

there is no questioning about the cinematographic success of this movie..as far as what is questioned by one professional reviewer is concerned, the value of its treatment of the basic themes, art and love, thats where the movie is actually the classic its bound to become. It 'subtly' questions the possibility of creative genius, in the characters of Rodin who was compromised to become a capitalist rather than a real artist despite his talents, Camille, who is brought down by her own pride, especially where it gets into conflict with her identity as a woman, and the earnest catholic poet Paul Claudel, Camille's brother who has been overshadowed by her influence in the family, who compromises with god and lays his genius in his hands. Camille never achieves self-confidence and knowledge and ends up paranoid because her unshakable awareness of her genius is bolstered only by pride and willpower when her lover is left, while Rodin ends up a puppet of the dominant forces in society having run after fame and fortune all his life- there are hints to the purely seducive and abstract nature of Rodin's art given by Paul throughout the movie. As a woman she gets pregnant from Rodin but their marriage doesnt follow since shes too proud to let Rodin know about it...shes done with the baby but her product as an artist remain as much opaque and alien to her as the fatherless baby she was to bear. Whether this is a peculiarly female tragedy is a question the movie doesnt seem to answer as far as my viewing is concerned. But in the least it problematizes deeply the existence of the artist.
So this is not a 'shallow' move at all, and but if youre looking for a movie that goes like popcorn it may seem so to you..

Movie Review: The manic genius of Camille Claudel
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of my favorite French films. I watch it at least once a year. Based on the book by Reine-Marie Paris, the grand-daughter of Camille's brother, the poet and diplomat Paul Claudel, and co-produced by Isabelle Adjani, the 1988 film examines the life of French sculptor, Camille Claudel (1864-1943). Adjani brings a stunning performance to the film as Claudel, and Gérard Depardieu provides a fine performance as Auguste Rodin. Both are convincing in their roles. In 1883, Claudel met Rodin, and around 1884 she began working in Rodin's workshop in Paris. She became Rodin's muse, his model, his confidante and mistress. However, Rodin was reluctant to end his 20-year relationship with Rose Beuret (played by Daniele Lebrun). Claudel's affair with Rodin alienated her family, so she left the family house and soon fell into a chronic depression. Around 1905 Claudel became mentally unhinged, destroying much of her work, acting paranoid, and accusing Rodin of stealing her ideas and of plotting her death. On March 10, 1913, Claudele was admitted to the psychiatric hospital of Ville-Évrard in Neuilly-sur-Marnedied by her brother Paul, and died thirty years later on October 19, 1943. Despite her madness, Claudel is depicted in this film as a fiercely independent woman and passionate artist, determined to live her life on her own terms, and to create sculptures out of clay in an artistic profession dominated by male sculptors. The last time I was in Paris, much of Claudel's surviving work was on exhibit at the Rodin Museum.

Movie Review: The "madness of mud" ...
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie was a 1989 nominee for the Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar, and, amazingly enough, received a Best Actress citation as well for Isabelle Adjani's outstanding performance.

This is the story of the title woman, an accomplished, renowned--albeit looney--artist/sculptress. That is basially, in a nutshell, the only real problem I had with the movie; it resorts to cliche and tries to tell us that she was crazy, when all she wanted was to be loved by her husband, the artist Rodin (Gerard Depardieu). This all allegedly happened in real life, keep in mind, and what we think is going to happen actually does happen towards the end of the movie.

The story is long, but satisfying. Isabelle Adjani is a sight to behold, as she's both a beautiful woman and an amazing actress; she'd have to be to hold our attention for almost three hours. And the French language truly will have an effect on all the non-speakers out there, like myself (but thank God for subtitles). All-in-all, definitely some good stuff.

If anyone wants to see more movies in the French language, check out "Indochine," starring the lovely Catherine Deneuve, and "Blue" starring the lovely Juliette Binoche.

All of the above are excellent foreign movies.

Movie Review: Isabelle is one of the finest actresses ever
Summary: 5 Stars

Adjani is able to take the tyrannical, childish Claudel and portray her with not only intrigue but passion, allowing the viewer to overlook Claudel's whistful predicament. Adjani takes the audience wholeheartedly into Claudel's mind, heart, art, and world with complete empathy. Her portrayal of the sculptress gives great meaning and understanding to the behaviors that proved to be Claude's own undoing.

With Adjani depressed and laying in a flooded apartment the audience has a desire to help her, rescue her, but if it were Claudel we'd most likely keep moving because of her pitifulness. Much of that credit goes to Adjani's beauty as well, not just her talent.

Claudel was never as beautiful as Adjani, sorry, tis true, and Claudel should thank Adjani for using her beauty to highlight her life and draw attention to her works so that they could possibly one day finally be included in Art History texts properly. Because of this film we are able to begin to scratch the surface of the magnitude of the contribution of Claudel's sculptures in relation to the Impressionistic era as a whole. Although dead, she is clearly nudging her way into the art timeline and taking her rightful post.

Good French film, a must have for art history buffs and small film lovers.
