Movie Reviews of Calle 54Movie Review: Superb. Summary: 5 Stars
This is THE video to own if you are a fan of latin jazz, or any type of improvisational music for that matter. Each performance features a unique artist who has been instrumental in shaping the Latin music of today. There are performances on here that you won't find anywhere else.
I think I have watched this movie about 30 times over, and I never get bored of it. Every great latin jazz artist is playing on here at least once. If you are a musician yourself, getting this video is like taking lessons from each artist featured.
There is something for everyone, and there are nice transitions from one song to the next. The film is a documentary so there are some parts featuring interviews with the legends. However, what you learn in the end is that each of these artists is a regular person like you and me, who loves music and has been able to live the dream of being a musician. You will be captivated by the great sounds.
Movie Review: Diverse, illuminating, and inspiring Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD takes viewers on a tour of places in South and Central America, as well as ethnic enclaves in places like Miami and the Bronx, for a look at some of the biggies in the Latin Jazz. The music is as diverse as the locales; it ranges from solo performances to small ensembles to big band. It is all a joy to listen to. My favourite performances are Chucho Valdes in a hearfelt solo piano piece, and Michel Camilo's trio featuring the great Anthony Jackson on six string electric bass. Some of the performers speak briefly about their influences and their music, but the music is really the highlight of this DVD. For musicians who were raised on rock and pop, this DVD is an eye-opener for what music can be. The synthesis of a wide range of influences combined with passion and an intimate understanding of group interplay can have spectacular results. Highly recommended for fans of any type of music.
Movie Review: A must-see film!! Summary: 5 Stars
"Calle 54" is an excellent example of how a music documentary should be made: emphasis on the music and very little narration. The focus is on the musicians and their music. From the beginning of the film, where we listen to the inimitable Paquito D'Rivera to the touching duet between Bebo and Chucho Valdes at the end, Fernando Trueba allows us to experience the virtuosity of these excellent musicians unobstructed by over-the-top narration. My personal favorite scenes were the segments on Eliane Elias and Michel Camilo. What great musicians! You can clearly see that they enjoy what they do, and their passion and enthusiasm for their music is contagious! You would have to be a rock not to find yourself tapping your foot to the music.
If this film does not serve to introduce newcomers to the wonder of latin jazz, then I don't know what will.
Movie Review: A must have for Chico O'Farrill fans Summary: 5 Stars
Brief but fabulous overview of the origins of Latin Jazz and its creators. It showcases some of the greatest (old and new) Latin Jazz musicians. Outstanding performances by Paquito D'Rivera with Dave Samuels, Dario Eskenazi and other great young jazz musicians. Tito Puente's last performance on video with Dave Valentin, Hilton Ruiz. Bebo Valdez first-ever recording with Cachao and a superb performance by the greatest Afro-Cuban composer and arranger of all times: Chico O'Farrill. Watch (and listen to) his Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite and you'll witness the greatness of this often forgotten and under-recognized genius. This track makes the DVD worth buying. The sound quality is superb. Calle 54, a must-have for the serious jazz lover. A jewel for those who really treasure Afro-Cuban jazz.
Movie Review: Sheer Delight Summary: 5 Stars
For many reasons this is one of the finest examples of music video coverage I've ever seen. If you are a fan of latin or jazz music you will not be dissapointed. From a technical standpoint the camera work and editing of the performance segments is outstanding. When any player does something outstanding from a trill on the bass to the double kick of a bass drum...the camera is there. The directing/editing of the music segments takes me where my eyes would have taken me had I been there. So often in music performance videos it seems the editors have no clue about what is really important in the music, thankfully that is not the case with Calle 54. Music shot with a musicians perspective in mind!
