Movie Reviews of Caligula (Unrated Twentieth Anniversary Edition)Movie Review: bizarre, stunning, incredible! Summary: 5 Stars
The movie concerns the rise and fall of Caligula from the emperor of Rome; and that is all; there's no more. If you look for a history lesson, this is not your movie... But frankly, i think that it wasn't Guccione's prime intention... He wanted to make such a movie that you cant forget... I first watched it when i was sixteenth... you see violence, rapes, all kind of sex... it didn't fail at this moment(late seventies) but it doesn't fail today... This is its best goal... Tinto brass began the shooting, but Bob Guccione fired him because Brass didn't work within Guccione's paremeters(aka: sex, sex...) So producer saw himself involved in actual shooting; Bob filmed hardcore stuff and put it in the movie without stars'knowledge... The final product is badly photographed, badly edited, badly shooted..., but nevertheless,is stunning; you know what you see are actors playing their parts..., but they are so real...! Great... Tinto BRass, Guccione and post production director G. Lui really did give their best shot...
Movie Review: The best erotic movie of all times Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a Cinema student, and after to have a deep analysis of Caligula; I think that The Stanley Kubrick's star Malcolm Mc. Dowell, the great Peter O'Toole, the various Oscar winner Danilo Donati and the King of sexploitation Tinto Brass, all they joints can't make a bad movie. I saw a lot of erotic films but I never saw the intensity of Caligula with this convination of tragedy, anthology abouth the power, extreme violence, orgyes ...and satirical comedy. Every image is a controversial mix of beautifull art and genitals. The rated version could be bether for the director Tinto Brass who don't like the porno scenes included by the producer Bob Giucione. I would like to see all the original film that Brass made without Giucione. Apart of this, Caligula is a spectacular movie like a Fellini or Pasolini's masterpiece with a incredible human atrezzo details, extremely decadent atmospheres and the best art design and art direction ... that I saw and by this reason: The best ... movie of all times.
Movie Review: Sick & twisted? Yes. Historically accurate? Kinda. Summary: 5 Stars
Got the unrated version so that it wasn't all cut up. I swear Americans are kind of backward at seeing flesh, but since I'm American I understand the Disney mentality - yet I guess that's what might spark more interest in these kinds of flix. Plus Ed hadn't seen the full on version so I HAD to add it to our vid library collection. A must-see IF you're mature enough to handle it.
The reason I say not historically accurate is that recent digs show that Caligula (Gaius Cesar) more than likely really DID try to invade Briton (aka Britain) and not just fight reeds; history notes that he died alone when leaving the gladiator games arena for lunch but his wife and child were indeed purported to have been killed as shown.
Just Google true history on it and you'll be more enlightened - if you have time - reading / watching weird stuff is just a hobby of mine. I don't limit me from any kind of knowledge ;-)
Movie Review: groundbreaking experiment in historical realism Summary: 5 Stars
i had heard the legend of this movie long before i saw it and i really didn't expect much more than sensationalism. having studied a great deal about the early roman empire, i knew the story of caligula very well. my surprise at watching this movie was the accuracy of this depiction of the mad emperor to the ancient latin source material. they could have toned down the graphic sexual content to earn an R rating and possibly draw a larger mainstream audience. would this have made for a better movie? not sure myself. is it pornography? if the graphic portrayal of human sexuality is the definition of pornography then yes it is in part pornography. if you are looking for subtlety in a roman emperial story check out i claudius. if you want the truth, and you can handle the truth then you should buy or rent this one today. probably not a family night movie, but certainly a memorable one.
Movie Review: Quality? Who Cares? Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, there's the deal. The movie was made over 20 years ago. They did the best they could as far as quality is concerned. And for those who don't have a DVD player, get one. The bottom line is that the movie is awesome. It's a "get in front of it" look at history. No holds barred. And don't waste your time with the r-rated version. The unrated version is the 'only' version. You've got killer actors, killer sets, killer cinematogrophy, killer plot, and if you don't mind the smut, a killer money shot. It's the best of ALL worlds in one movie. Brass, Guccione, and Vidal make a killer team even if they don't want to admit it. Big budget, big actors, big ugly product. I'm sorry but I loved it! If you don't have a weak stomach, and if you love history, and if you dig a little sex, this is the flick to see.
