Movie Reviews of Cadillac RecordsMovie Review: When The Delta Blues Went Electric & Became The Chicago Style!! Summary: 5 Stars
Even though they played around with historical facts and figures,
I still found this movie to be very entertaining and all the
cast did a good job in their respective parts.
This is about how Leonard Chess (a 2nd generation polish-american jew)
and his brother Phil founded the very influential CHESS label
in the late 40's and early 50's and gave the black music
that had come up from the south with the great migration a voice
and a new electric aggressive amplified sound that became known
as the Chicago Blues!
Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, John Lee Hooker,
Chuck Berry, Etta James, Koko Taylor and early gospel artists
like a very young Aretha Franklin and her father, the very
influential Reverend C.L. Franklin all found a home at Chess
and their art was heard all over America and beyond to England
where people like Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger,
Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Burdon, John Lennon,
Paul Macartney, George Harrison and many many others were
inspired to create a british rock revolution that changed
pop & rock music forever!
Chess Records was pre-SUN, pre-STAX and pre-Motown!
Its only contemporary would be Atlantic Records.
The real story is far more tumultuous and interesting than
this movie could ever be, but then it would've been a 3 hour flick.
I would definitely add it to my collection for the history and
for rememberance of the label that was a fixture in most
music loving households from the late 40's to the late 60's
when Leonard Chess sold it and died soon after from a massive
heart attack only a few blocks from the site where
his musical empire once stood!
Movie Review: Band playing the covers of the Chess artists in the movie. Summary: 5 Stars
The music played in this movie was what made this film believable. The band played so close to the original versions of the songs covered in this movie. Each musician was hand picked by the great Steve Jordon to play as close as possible to sound like the musicians on the original recordings. Marshall Chess was their when we recorded this and said " "Never in my whole life sence the early days at Chess have I heard or seen anyone play or sound like you!" - Marshall Chess (2008)
Steve Jordon, Kim Wilson, Larry "The Mole" Taylor,( Hubert Sumlim, who was on all of the Chess recordings with Howlin Wolf) Billy Flynn, Eddie Taylor Jr, Barrelhouse Chuck were the musicians who played on this soundtrack.
Remember this is Hollywood! Yes their wasn't Phil Chess, Bo Diddley, and Sonny Boy Williamson ( to name a few). Their were many other people left out of the movie. Almost every artist at Chess was a star! They couldn't have everyone in the movie.
I am so glad that this movie brought back the attection to the public all around the world the names of Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin Wolf, Chuck Berry, and the great Etta James. Now go buy these Chess artists records. Listen how great they played! No one ever could touch them or sound just like them, or sing just like them. Or ever will.
How lucky we were to have listened to Muddy, Walter, Willie Dixon, Sunnyland Slim, Johnny Johnson, Otis Spann, Chuck Berry, Howlin Wolf. We learned how to play our music by these great original Chess recordings! This is the pride of Chicago! CHESS RECORDS!!
Living in Chicago getting to hear a lot of these artists play live really made the difference for us musicians here in the city.
Movie Review: Never would have known Summary: 5 Stars
I've read the many of the reviews written before this one and I understand that there are many knowledgeable people when it comes to the inaccuracies of this movie. However, the criticisms are made on the acknowledgements of the facts and not on the bases of how well the actors portrayed their characters or how well the director directed this movie. Every documentary/biography is not going to always be completely factual because let's face it, these movies are made in Hollywood. I am a big fan of r&b music and its history. This movie was more than just entertaining to me. After seeing it, it made me want to go out and learn more about each individual person's journey from his/her beginning to his/her end. I never would have known about a Little Walter or a Muddy Waters had it not been for "Cadillac Records." I am a twenty-something year old woman and there are not too many people my age who were even interested in seeing this movie. It's sad that a movie this good and actors like Columbus Short, Jeffrey Wright, and Beyonce' Knowles did not receive the accolades they were due. I hope that in the near future there will be individual movies about Little Walter, Etta James, Chuck Berry, and all the other musicians in the movie because even though this movie was great, I truly believe that their lives were better than any fiction.
Movie Review: The Blues With Heart and Soul Summary: 5 Stars
I won't mince words by stating that this is one of the best films to be released in 2008. I have to go back to "The Buddy Holly Story" in 1978 to recall a better portrayal of popular music translated to the screen. The criticism of both films seem to be with the dramatic license the makers take. I won't argue with the distortion of the facts but as long as the essence of the story is captured I take no objection. The thing I find admirable about "Cadillac Records" is that it's not some slick sugar-coated confection(see "Ray"). This is a tough film about musicians who legitimately suffered for their art. What is amazing is director Darnell Martin juggles so many personal stories satisfactorily in a relatively short running time. You could easily make a miniseries with the material here. The cast is uniformly excellent but I'd like to give special attention to Beyonce Knowles' portrayal of Etta James. Previously I dismissed Knowles as a pretty voice and face probably unfairly since the only films I saw her in were "Austin Powers" and "Dreamgirls" where she had an underwritten part. With limited screen time Knowles convincingly portrays the heartache and pain that James experienced. I was so entranced that I longed for a film devoted solely to James. I recommend this film with no reservations.
Movie Review: Loved It! Summary: 5 Stars
I enjoyed this movie having actually overheard a lot of the basics of the content when all this was actually happening. To see it unfold in a well made movie version was awesome for me. Most movies leave some things out but at least this was well done. Do Chess's family really want the real deal out there where as this movie is nice to him but we know in reality he cheated his artists. That part is glossed over. It is being reported not only here but in the news that it is not 100% on the mark so I say to viewers keep that in mind with any movie based on or inspired by a true story. Facts can overload and take away from a story. I'm looking forward to seeing my own book made into a movie and hope I agree with the results.
