Movie Reviews of CaddyshackMovie Review: "Doody!" Summary: 2 Stars
I used to live at Rolling Hills Golf and Country Club where CADDYSHACK was filmed, and from my third floor apartment overlooking the eighteenth hole I got to hear every line of dialogue in this film repeated ad nauseam by wannabe Rodneys, Chevys, Teds and Bill Murrays. I also got to see careless golfers' carts tip over, dumping them into the lake, something that should have been in this film, but wasn't.
Frankly, I've never understood why CADDYSHACK rates so very high amongst comedies. The individual comedic performances are consistently very funny (and in Rodney Dangerfield's case, truly inspired), but this film always has struck me as LESS than the sum of its parts.
In CADDYSHACK I always feel as though I'm watching a dozen competing stand-up acts a la the cable show MAKE ME LAUGH. The various bits (such as the infamous pool scene) are individually hilarious. Unfortunately, none of it meshes comfortably into a cohesive whole, and I never find myself wholeheartedly enjoying this film.
And, considering it was an afterthought anyhow, I wish they'd lose the gopher entirely. Man, that shtick is just plain dumb.
Movie Review: If you own an HD DVD player, get that version instead Summary: 2 Stars
5 stars for the movie, 2 stars for this DVD
This movie is a classic, and one of my favorite comedies.
The picture quality and sound are TERRIBLE on this DVD.
Now, I realize that I do own an HDTV and an HD-DVD player, (which improves picture and sound, making imperfections more noticeable than a standard DVD player would), but still, this DVD sucks.
The picture is grainy, with way too vibrant colors and way too much grain.
The sound (especially on music) drops out frequently.
The extras are stupid and pointless, not worth more than one viewing.
I own this version as well as the HD DVD version, and that version makes a HUGE improvement on picture and sound from this release.
BOTTOM LINE: If you own a VHS copy and/ or DVD release of this film, and own an HD DVD player, GET THE HD DVD RELEASE.
If you don't own an HD DVD player, then this version is, sadly, the next best thing (if you own the previous DVD or a VHS copy, there is no need to buy this).
This classic deserves MUCH better treatment on DVD than this.
Movie Review: atrocious Summary: 1 Stars
Man, I gotta learn to stop trusting the Internet.
I watched this because I recently saw it listed as #2 on Bravo's list of funniest movies of all time.
I had known about Caddyshack for decades, but for some reason never saw a bit of it. But after reading about its ranking, I determined to watch it. Even without that ranking, it's famous enough on its own terms. Plus I love Ramis and Murray!
But what was all the excitement about? I didn't get a single laugh out of this. The entire thing was moronic.
I've got no problem with teen flicks and even potty humor, but this movie had no real plot or message, just a series of anecdotes connected by nothing more than that they all took place at a golf resort.
I wish I could travel back in time to 1980, when this was released. I'd go see it in some theater, sit in the very front row, and then turn around at glare at all the morons who found this funny.
Definitely humor from a more innocent age. Doesn't hold up well.
Movie Review: Ruined by too much garbage Summary: 1 Stars
OVERALL, this might have been one of those "silly but cute" comedies, the kind you watch when you just want a good belly laugh.
Unfortunately, Hollywood had to dress it up with the usual junk that's been so prevalent the last few decades. Sex, nudity, palm reading, jokes about drunkenness. I know this doesn't bother most people. But those who care about such things may want to consider this before buying the movie.
Me? I'm throwing my copy away. It isn't even worth selling.
