Movie Reviews of Cabin in the SkyMovie Review: HAPPINESSS IS JUST A THING CALLED "Cabin" on DVD! Summary: 5 Stars
The beautiful Vernon Duke/John La Touche Broadway hit CABIN IN THE SKY was brought to the screen by the foremost studio of the era (the late and lamented M-G-M) and the foremost producer of musicals there, the magnificent Arthur Freed.
Freed engaged the services of the Broadway hit's original star Ethel Waters, and gave Vincente Minnelli his first assignment as a motion picture director. Minnelli had directed on stage, but spent two years at Metro learning the craft of filmmaking, before Freed gave him the opportunity to become one of the greatest of all motion picture directors. Minnelli's musicals are what he is best known for, but he also directed brilliant dramas (both period and contemporary), comedies (both slapstick and witty) and even films that could be considered noir. This man could do anything.....
The Warner DVD of CABIN features a clean, and crisp transfer with lovely extras including the Pete Smith short STUDIO VISIT which has the surviving footage of Lena Horne's outtake song from CABIN "Ain't it The Truth". The audio track for Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong's version of that same song, is used here with still visuals, as either that version was never filmed, or the number didn't survive in the copious musical outtake archive that the old MGM maintained, which now belongs in the hands of the mightiest of all studios (when it comes to DVDs) WB. I also loved the commentary with sound bytes from Lena Horne and Rochester's widow and daughter.

Movie Review: A Treasure! Summary: 5 Stars
"Cabin in the Sky" is remarkable for how undated it is...considering it is a segregated movie. You wouldn't know America was peopled by anything but African Americans by watching this move.
The really amazing thing is that the relationships between people in this film seem so modern. The banter is modern. The jokes are modern.
And...this movie is MUCH less dated than any comtemporary comedy by Bob Hope, or Laural and Hardy, or the Three Stooges. Consider: The truely embarassing thing about blacks in old Hollywood movies is not what they do, but the patronizing, superior way the whites in the movies interact with them. Since there are no whites in this movie, we are spared the painful interaction between the races.
This movie is like a parallel universe because the interactions and relationships are modern...almost as if the black model for human interaction is the one American society went with. And a good thing too! Bless this movie if only for giving us one more look at the Bodisatva, Louie Armstrong and the divine diva Ethel Waters.

Movie Review: This is an historic American Classic finally ported to DVD! Summary: 5 Stars
I am so excited about the release of this absolutely AWESOME African American treasure. The cast in this film is legendary, the plot engaging, and the music is intoxicating.
I have been saving a VHS copy of this film to transfer to DVD. It's the ONLY VHS movie I've held onto. Every one of my friends that has seen it has wondered why they never heard of it.
Ethel Waters' character shows incredible commitment to turning her husband into the man God made him to be. It's one of the first serious Black films to be recorded during its era. This is a departure from the stereotypic minstrel movies of its time.
Whether you're Black or Martian-American, this is a GREAT American classic film. Buy this one - it's a wonderful piece.
Movie Review: Cabin in the Sky Summary: 5 Stars
In this era of required political correctness, it has become fashionible to pan movies such as this musical. In its day, Cabin in the Sky was a big hit on the stage and a delight on the screen. It is still all of that today and tells us where we were way back when and if viewed in the context of its time is as good entertainment as you will find.
The casting is the best of the day. You cannot top Ethel Waters,Rochester and Lena Horne, and the supporting cast will all be familiar to movie watchers and all give great performances. This was the first movie Vincent Man directed and you will see he had his art form figured out from the get go.
Great music and an easy watch in black and white. A must see.
Movie Review: This is a movie must have! Summary: 5 Stars
Cabin in the Sky is an excellent black film. The movie is funny, very entertaining and although a fictional story, it leaves you with a lesson learned regarding the choices you make. I was first introduced to Cabin in the Sky by my father at the age of 15 (now 32). I loved this 60+ year old clasic then and the feeling is still the same. When I heard the DVD version is coming in January, you would have thought I won money. I am so excited and can not wait to watch it once again with the man who introduced me to this excellent film.
