Movie Review: Appointment With Repentance

Petunia (Ethel Waters) is a woman who is close to the Lord. She prays for her husband, Little Joe (Eddie "Rochester "Anderson), daily, keeping the faith that he can become a better man. Little Joe finally attends church with Petunia and the man is trying to get to the altar to give his life to the Lord when he's snatched away by hoodlums who want him to gamble now and get saved later. Trouble comes and Petunia rushes to her husband's side while everyone else is running away. Little Joe ends up in his death bed and the battle for his spirit begins. Demons show up once he's left his body. Petunia sends up a powerful prayer and God's angels show up. Little Joe pleads his case to one of God's soldiers so he won't have to go to hell and a discussion between God's angels, Satan's demons and Joe takes place in the spiritual realm while Petunia continues to pray. Little Joe is given a second chance to live right, to make better choices, and, most importantly, to get saved. Demons plot to make Little Joe fall before his time is up and they plan to use Georgia Brown (Lena Horne) to get the job done. Will Joe give his life to the Lord before it's too late?
I liked Petunia. She was a woman who knew how to come boldly to the throne and she told God exactly how she felt. Something did happen to cause her to backslide, as many Christians have done. But she didn't forget how to call on God when trouble came again. That was good.
This was an okay movie except for one thing: The time to receive Jesus as personal Lord and Savior is before the spirit leaves the body.

Debuting movie director Vincente Minnelli (An American in Paris, Gigi) and stars Ethel Waters, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are more than a match for the devil in this musical treasure. With a soundtrack of dazzling standards including Taking a Chance on Love and Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe, Cabin in the Sky is a joyous classic.The first film directed by Vincente Minnelli (who directed the original Broadway version), this musical offers its pleasures, but also may make you squirm at the racial stereotypes that were considered both acceptable and entertaining in 1943. A story of the struggle between good and evil for the soul of a man named Little Joe (Eddie "Rochester" Anderson), the film plays with the same kind of racial notions that made Stepin Fetchit a star. Still, there's much to recommend it, particularly performances by some of the greatest musical stars of the day: Lena Horne, Ethel Waters, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington, among others. The film also includes a terrific score, a combination effort by Ellington, Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke, and E.Y. Harburg that includes the song "Taking a Chance on Love." --Marshall Fine
